William & Kate

William & Kate Review

William & Kate Overview

How did Kate Middleton, an ordinary British girl, come to be Prince William s intended? Over an eight-year courtship, her warmth, humor, and grace under pressure convinced him she was the one. From University to the altar...this is the true life making of a Princess.

They've charmed the world with their romantic love affair, engagement and eagerly awaited royal wedding. The Lifetime Original Movie WILLIAM & KATE tells the story of Prince William (Nico Evers-Swindell, NCIS: Los Angeles, Law & Order) and Kate Middleton (Camilla Luddington, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, The Defenders), from the moment they met at the University of St. Andrews to the intense media attention surrounding their storybook romance. William & Kate also stars Ben Cross (Chariots of Fire) as Prince Charles, Serena Scott-Thomas (The World Is Not Enough) as Carole Middleton, Richard Reid (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone) as Ian and Victoria Tennant (L.A. Story) as Celia.

William & Kate Specifications

The royal love story of Prince William and comely commoner Kate Middleton captured the hearts of the world, and the Lifetime movie William & Kate takes viewers deep inside the relationship. William & Kate is well acted and no expense was spared to re-create key parts of Scotland and England as a lush backdrop to this modern-day fairy tale. William is played quite competently by Nico Evers-Swindell, and conveys just the right amount of the reserve and wry humor the prince is known for. Camilla Luddington plays Middleton, and her performance is spunky and appealing. The story starts at the beautiful campus of St. Andrews in Scotland, where William and Kate share classes and become friends--Middleton not particularly intimidated by the prince's title, and thinking there's no chance for a romance with a commoner, anyway. So they become good friends, and the rest unfolds as the viewer knows--but with detail and charm added to make the story all the more real. As with any based-on-a-true-story film, William & Kate lends itself to the second-guessing of casting. But both Evers-Swindell and Luddington, though not doppelgängers for William and Kate, look enough like their real-life counterparts to be quite believable. However, Ben Cross (Chariots of Fire) is simply too distractingly handsome to be very believable as Prince Charles. Viewers keep having to remind themselves that handsome guy is Prince Charles, which does take away from the flow of William & Kate. But for fans of the Royal Family, history buffs, and lovers of a sweet modern-day fairy tale, William & Kate makes for splendid viewing indeed. --A.T. Hurley

These voyagers discover what is truly at stake as they pedal on, praying for the deliverance only the finish line can bring. By journey's end, some are saved, others are lost, but all learn that the fuel that takes a soul toward its own true destiny is desire.

What the critics are saying:

"Bicycle Dreams is a beautiful film that probes deeply into the sport's heart of darkness, offering an inspiring glimpse at the high price of glory." --USA Today

"Winner of fifteen film festival awards, Bicycle Dreams is a truly gripping film, with more drama in 8 days than an entire Tour De France. Bicycle Dreams is riveting, possibly because it's less about bikes and more about people. It's a fierce human drama with bikes simply and literally being the vehicles for hope, pain, disillusionment, despair, happiness, effort, and as the title suggests, dreams. It's an impressive, inspirational film." --CinemaTalk

Knight and Day (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo+ Digital Copy)

Knight and Day (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo+ Digital Copy) Review

Knight and Day (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo+ Digital Copy) Overview

Big screen superstars Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz come together in this fun, action-packed thrill-ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat. When a small-town girl named June (Diaz) meets a mysterious stranger, she thinks she's found the man of her dreams. But she soon discovers he's a fugitive super-spy, who thrusts her into a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase that spans the globe. As the bullets and sparks fly, June must decide if her "Knight" in shining armor is a dangerous traitor or the love of her life.

Knight and Day (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo+ Digital Copy) Specifications

Knight and Day has action by the boatload, cheeky wit, unexpected double-crossing, sexual tension, and the blinding smile of its star, Tom Cruise. In short, what more could you ask of a rollicking good-time movie? Knight and Day, which also stars the irresistible Cameron Diaz as Cruise's superspy's ultimate foil, channels the best elements of earlier films like Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Mission: Impossible, the Bourne films, and even a little of Duplicity's sophistication. Mostly, though, Knight and Day is about moving things along merrily, if not completely coherently, as the two stars tangle, and tussle with trust issues, in a completely believable, compulsively watchable way. Cruise plays Roy, an on-the-lam spy (who may have had some kind of psychotic break--or who may in fact be the only person telling the truth); he runs into the winsome June (Diaz), who gets caught up in Roy's mad dash to escape the cabal of federal agents on his tail. "No one follows us," Roy announces to a terrified diner crowd as he moves to make his escape with June, "or I kill myself--and then her." While Knight and Day, directed by James Mangold, has more than its share of high-speed chases, hails of bullets, and explosions, it works far better as a romantic comedy--for the chemistry between Diaz and Cruise is delicious, palpable, and believable. So grab a date and an extra-large popcorn, and get ready for a sweet and fun Knight and Day. --A.T. Hurley

Agatha Christie's Poirot: The Movie Collection - Set 4

Agatha Christie's Poirot: The Movie Collection - Set 4 Review

Agatha Christie's Poirot: The Movie Collection - Set 4 Overview

David Suchet returns as Hercule Poirot--the Belgian sleuth of unsurpassed deductive powers and peerless viewer appeal--in two fresh adaptations of Christie classics. As seen on PBS’s Mystery!

Mrs. McGinty’s Dead--With help from mystery novelist and old friend Ariadne Oliver (Zoë Wanamaker), Poirot tries to save a man from hanging for a murder he might not have committed. As the famous sleuth tracks down the real killer, he finds his own life at risk.

Cat Among the Pigeons--As Meadowbank School for Girls begins its term, a new student causes the headmistress unease. Princess Shaista is a political refugee hiding from revolutionaries in her native land. Fortunately, when the bodies start turning up, Poirot is on hand.

EXCLUSIVE BONUS PROGRAM: Super Sleuths, a documentary about the series featuring stars David Suchet, Philip Jackson, Hugh Fraser, and Pauline Moran; producer Brian Eastman; director Ed Bennett; writer Anthony Horowitz; and others.

Agatha Christie's Poirot: The Movie Collection - Set 4 Specifications

David Suchet continues his definitive (and supremely entertaining) portrayal of Agatha Christie's Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot in Mrs. McGinty's Dead and Cat Among the Pigeons. Poirot is one of those classic characters of fiction who would be intolerable in real life, yet is delightful on the page (or in this case, the screen). Suchet, with his heavy-lidded but piercing eyes and an absurd little mustache, perfectly captures the balance of narcissism and nosiness--how Poirot uses his superciliousness to make himself seem harmless and unthreatening to the murderers and other criminals who meet and underestimate him. Accompanying the two mysteries is an engaging behind-the-scenes documentary that, among other thoughtful observations from the actors and writers of the series, points out that Poirot's foreignness allowed Christie to gently mock the peculiarities and obsessions of the English.

As Poirot strives to rescue a young man unjustly sentenced to death in Mrs. McGinty's Dead, he survives an assault on his own life as well as the brusque and pushy manners of his friend, crime novelist Ariadne Oliver (Zoe Wanamaker). The character of Oliver gave Christie the opportunity to poke fun at her own career, such as when the grumpy novelist bickers with a playwright in an attempt to infuse an adaptation with more sex appeal. Mrs. McGinty's Dead is entirely enjoyable, but it suffers a bit from excessive directorial flash with the camera. Cat Among the Pigeons, on the other hand, is a perfect fusion of story and style, where subtle visual flourishes enhance the plot's forward movement and mood of anticipation. The headmistress of a girls' school asks Poirot to help her choose her successor--but when a tyrannical teacher is murdered in the sports pavilion, Poirot soon unravels a tapestry of hidden rubies, a faraway revolution, a voodoo doll, and a missing tennis racket. Flashes of wit increase the fun (The headmistress huffs, "Mr. Poirot has an international reputation"--"So does Mussolini," grumbles the local constable). Suchet's skilled performances in Agatha Christie's Poirot: The Movie Collection - Set 4 will please long-time fans and would be an excellent starting point for any beginner. --Bret Fetzer
