What If

What If Review

What If Overview

Fifteen years ago, Ben Walker (Kevin Sorbo) made a decision to leave his college sweetheart Wendy (Kristy Swanson), and ultimately his faith, in order to pursue a lucrative business opportunity. Now on the verge of marriage to an equally materialistic fiance, he is visited by an angelic mechanic (John Ratzenberger) who tells him that he needs to see what his life would have been like had he followed Gods calling. Suddenly, Ben finds himself married to Wendy with two daughters, including a rebellious teen (Debby Ryan), getting ready for church on a Sunday morning, where he's scheduled to give his first sermon as the new pastor. If Ben wants to get back to his old life, he must first learn to appreciate the value of faith and family, and perhaps rediscover the love of his life. In the tradition of It's a Wonderful Life and The Family Man, What If tells the story of a man whose glimpse into what he's missing reminds him of what he truly wants.

What If received the "Dove Foundation's Family Seal of Approval" with 5 out of 5 Doves and was also awarded the Parent's Television Councils PTC seal of Approval™.

From Jerry Jenkins, the author of Left Behind. Named by Movieguide as one of the "Top Ten Family Movies of 2010."

Special Features: Behind the Scenes, Director's Commentary, Closed Captioning, Dolby Digital.

Remember Me Overview

Set in early 2001, this moving and romantic drama stars "Twilight" heartthrob Robert Pattinson as a sullen NYU student who, on a dare, asks out classmate and fellow New Yorker Emilie de Ravin. As they're drawn together, the duo find the strength to deal with tragedies in their pasts, but this newfound happiness will eventually face an unimaginable test. Pierce Brosnan, Chris Cooper, Tate Ellington. 112 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH), Spanish; audio commentary; "making of" featurette.

Remember Me Specifications

Rebel Without a Cause meets Ordinary People in postmillennial Manhattan, resulting in Hollywoodland director Allen Coulter's Remember Me. Twilight's tousle-haired Robert Pattinson plays Tyler, a chain-smoking New York University student with a substantial chip on his shoulder. Drifting through life devoid of ambition, he lost his older brother to suicide, his parents are divorced, and his father, Charles (Pierce Brosnan), spends more time in the boardroom than with his kids (Lena Olin plays Tyler's mother). Tyler takes refuge in his friendships with wisecracking roommate Aidan (Tate Ellington) and artistic younger sister Caroline (Ruby Jerins). One night, he and Aidan enter a scuffle outside a club, and Sergeant Craig (Chris Cooper) takes him in for mouthing off, even though he was trying to break things up. When Aidan discovers that they go to school with Craig's daughter, Ally (Lost's Emilie de Ravin), he dares his pal to date and dump the Queens coed to get back at Craig. Game for anything, Tyler gives it a try, and Ally takes the bait, but he puts all thoughts of revenge aside when he finds himself falling in love. Ten years before, Ally lost her mother (Martha Plimpton in an unbilled cameo), and she understands him better than most anyone else, but the timing is off, and the events of 9/11 will change the lives of both families forever. The descent toward melodrama at the end threatens to derail Coulter's delicate project, but he sets things right in time to make Remember Me an affecting experience. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

America: The Story of Us

America: The Story of Us Review

America: The Story of Us Feature

  • A riveting adventure of how America was invented, AMERICA THE STORY OF US focuses on the people, ideas and events that built our nation, covering 400 years of American history in the most extensive and in-depth television series ever produced by HISTORY . From the rigors of linking the continent by wagon trails to the transcontinental railway, the engineering of steel-structured buildings, to land

America: The Story of Us Overview

From executive producer Jane Root of Planet Earth, comes the breathtaking journey through history--unlike any other in the past 40 years--with live-action recreations of key historical events through the use of cutting edge CGI animation, giving viewers an immersive view of history in the making.

America: The Story of Us Specifications

With 12 chapters spread out over three discs and a total running time of more than nine hours (not including bonus material), the History Channel's America: The Story of Us is a sprawling primer on the history of the country and its people. Starting about 100 years after Columbus with the arrival of the earliest white settlers from across the Atlantic and finishing in the present day, the series can boast episodes devoted to major conflicts like the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and World War II; the more gradual but still significant developments that helped shape the nation (like western expansion and the mass migration to major cities); and the various elements and forces (the discovery of oil; the growth of industry, engineering, and infrastructure; the development of the automobile and other means of mass transportation, and, of course, the accumulation of vast economic and military might) that combined to make the United States the world's dominant superpower in the 20th century and beyond. To the filmmakers' credit, the darker aspects of this history--slavery and racial strife, the treatment of Native Americans, the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII--are not given short shrift. And while much of the material is dealt with in fairly broad strokes, there are also various enlightening details in each chapter. Who knew that George Washington established a network of spies who wrote notes in invisible ink in order to deceive the British, or that the most valuable currency for those who first explored the West was beaver pelts?

A combination of reenactments, photos, CGI, models, and other elements delivers a great deal of information here, along with frequent references to Americans' pioneer spirit, devotion to hard work, and belief that if you can dream it, you can do it. Yet this isn't an especially scholarly document. The events depicted, from the Boston Tea Party and Paul Revere's midnight ride to the Alamo and the Gettysburg Address, not to mention more lurid tales like the Donner Party and the St. Valentine's Day Massacre, should be familiar to those with even a cursory knowledge of US history. The emphasis on star power, be it the comments from a parade of talking heads including actors, musicians, politicians (President Barack Obama among them), athletes, soldiers, and so on, or the focus on charismatic historical figures like John Brown, Daniel Boone, and many others, reflects our celebrity-obsessed culture. And the constant hyperbole (narrator Liev Schreiber intones some variation of "What's about to happen will change things forever!" at least half a dozen times in the first episode alone) becomes tedious. Then again, considering the number of Americans who can't find their own country on a map, presenting the material like a dramatic TV show instead of textbook was a shrewd idea. --Sam Graham

Hawaii Five-0: The First Season Feature

  • Deleted Scenes
  • Shore Lines: The Story of Season 1 Aloha Action!
  • Grace Park's Hawaiian Tour
  • Cast and Crews commentaries on selected episodes
  • Re-scoring the Theme Songs

Hawaii Five-0: The First Season Overview

Hawaii Five-O is a contemporary take on the classic series about a new elite federalized task force whose mission is to wipe out the crime that washes up on the Islands' sun-drenched beaches.

Hawaii Five-0: The First Season Specifications

It's possible that the popularity of Lost's tropical background played some role in resurrecting this slicked-down update of the famous cop show that ran for 12 solid seasons starting in 1968. There's certainly a strong travelogue element in the 2010 remix that includes glamorous tourist hot spots, rundown native shantytowns, and the sultry, photogenic wilds that make up most of the 50th state. The production team is careful to work in an amalgam of Hawaii's distinctive geography, along with enough stunt-filled action, pyrotechnics, and sexy style to make it appealing enough for an audience that probably doesn't remember Steve McGarrett, Jack Lord, or the inimitable drumbeats of the show's classic theme song. That rousing opening number, the beautiful backdrops, and the starring characters' names are pretty much all that's left over from the original Hawaii Five-0. Rather than the robotic, just-the-facts demeanor that defined Jack Lord's authoritative presence as the special cop squad's commander, the new Steve McGarrett (Aussie hunk Alex O'Loughlin) is an ex-Navy Seal who dives into foot chases, gunfights, and dangerous situations whenever possible, bringing a dreamy, heartthrob charisma that's the exact opposite of Jack Lord's steely, low-key magnetic charm. His number two, Dan Williams (a buff and tough Scott Caan), is a New Jersey transplant who plays dyspeptic foil to McGarrett's impetuous and often illegal whims in the name of crime fighting, telling him that he's crazy, but then backing him up all the way. Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Dae Kim, a survivor from the Lost ensemble) is a disgraced cop brought back to the job by McGarrett, and Kono (Grace Park) has transformed from a hulking bruiser into a swimsuit model fresh out of the academy and with martial arts moves galore. This special task force has been designated by the governor (Jean Smart) as an elite major crimes unit that works outside the police chain of command, and often flaunts the rules to get their man. In an overarching plot thread, that man is the shadowy bad guy responsible for the murder of McGarrett's parents, eventually revealed to be Japanese yakuza leader and master villain Wo Fat (Mark Dacascos, who also played "The Chairman" on Food Network's Iron Chef America). When not focusing on Wo Fat and the elaborate mystery that reaches into the upper echelons of government, the episodes are based around the Five-0 team chasing terrorists, hostage takers, modern-day pirates, and a variety of desperate criminals. In nearly every situation McGarrett is given cause to go rogue by taking pretty much everything personally. Danny (or Danno, as in, "Book 'em, Danno!") is always there to remind him that he's crazy to cross so many lines, but also has his back in every tough spot McGarrett gets them into. In fact, the whole team is always there for each other with lots of interaction that teases out the personal lives of every character. It lends a touchy-feely tone to the show that was never, ever part of the Jack Lord-era Hawaii Five-0, but which helps this reboot by adding an emotional element that sometimes even bleeds into the action. And plenty of action there is. Shootouts, hand-to-hand combat, elaborate practical stunts, on-set special effects, and CGI enhancements all give the show a brisk and exciting pace, even if the scripts tend to rehash the same kinds of criminal setups. To keep it in the same high-tech league as other series such as NCIS, Criminal Minds, and the CSI franchise, Five-0 also has a command center filled with the latest computer gadgetry to keep them a step ahead in a world of state-of-the-art crime. The 24 episodes in this season-one set end with a fiery cliffhanger that clearly lets loose a big can of worms for the Five-0 team to track down in season two. Also included in the six-disc package are the usual outtakes and gag reel, commentary on two episodes, and a bunch of short pieces with self-explanatory titles like "The Story of Season 1," "Aloha Action!," "The Making of the Pilot," and "Re-scoring the Theme Song." They're a mixed bag, but the episodes themselves are consistently grade-A in bringing a contemporary, hyperbolic flair to a show that first came on the air more than 40 years ago. --Ted Fry

Jake Sully Pandora Military Base  Navi Team
Sully and NeytiriTrudy ChaconNeytiri

KIDS FIRST! Review: Director/screenwriter/producer James Cameron brings his science fiction roots to DVD with the award-winning film, "Avatar." The almost three-hour epic is considered by many as the most beautiful movie ever produced thanks to its groundbreaking 3-D and graphics technology. Set in the far future, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), travels to Pandora, a lush, jungle-covered extraterrestrial moon and home to a sentient humanoid race, the Na'vi. The 10-foot tall, blue-skinned Na'vi fight when a human corporation attempts to remove the indigenous people from their native lands. Human scientists create genetically-bred human-Na'vi hybrids known as Avatars to overcome the fact that they can’t breathe Pandora air. Jake participates in this program and encounters many dangers and beauties on Pandora as he scouts around. “Avatar” exhibits cinematographic and artistic excellence and creates interest in issues such as the environment. KIDS FIRST! Child Juror Comments: This DVD had great cinematography and amazing visual effects. One of my all-time favorite parts of the film was when Jake was walking through the forest of Pandora - everything lit up and looked amazing. The movie had a great soundtrack. It had a new age feel that felt like it was inviting you into a new world. It made the whole thing seem tangible, which is great. I wanted to be part of that world. The acting was great, too! You could tell which characters were bad and which were good with some bad sides. Overall one of the best movies I've seen. The actors roles fit their appearance, and there was a lot of foreshadowing and hinting throughout the movie.

Avatar (Original Theatrical Edition) Specifications

After 12 years of thinking about it (and waiting for movie technology to catch up with his visions), James Cameron followed up his unsinkable Titanic with Avatar, a sci-fi epic meant to trump all previous sci-fi epics. Set in the future on a distant planet, Avatar spins a simple little parable about greedy colonizers (that would be mankind) messing up the lush tribal world of Pandora. A paraplegic Marine named Jake (Sam Worthington) acts through a 9-foot-tall avatar that allows him to roam the planet and pass as one of the Na'vi, the blue-skinned, large-eyed native people who would very much like to live their peaceful lives without the interference of the visitors. Although he's supposed to be gathering intel for the badass general (Stephen Lang) who'd like to lay waste to the planet and its inhabitants, Jake naturally begins to take a liking to the Na'vi, especially the feisty Neytiri (Zoë Saldana, whose entire performance, recorded by Cameron's complicated motion-capture system, exists as a digitally rendered Na'vi). The movie uses state-of-the-art 3D technology to plunge the viewer deep into Cameron's crazy toy box of planetary ecosystems and high-tech machinery. Maybe it's the fact that Cameron seems torn between his two loves--awesome destructive gizmos and flower-power message mongering--that makes Avatar's pursuit of its point ultimately uncertain. That, and the fact that Cameron's dialogue continues to clunk badly. If you're won over by the movie's trippy new world, the characters will be forgivable as broad, useful archetypes rather than standard-issue stereotypes, and you might be able to overlook the unsurprising central plot. (The overextended "take that, Michael Bay" final battle sequences could tax even Cameron enthusiasts, however.) It doesn't measure up to the hype (what could?) yet Avatar frequently hits a giddy delirium all its own. The film itself is our Pandora, a sensation-saturated universe only the movies could create. --Robert Horton

The Reef

The Reef Review

The Reef Overview

After losing everything, a young fish, Pi, goes to live with his family on the Reef. There he meets the love of his life but finds that she already has the unwanted affections of a bully shark. He must follow his destiny to save her and rid the Reef of this menace for good.

The Reef Specifications

The story of a young fish who suffers a great loss and moves to a new town where he falls in love with a beautiful fish and angers the resident shark bully, The Reef (initially known as Shark Bait) is a beautifully computer animated film with striking similarities to Finding Nemo and Shark Tale. The first Hollywood feature-length, all computer generated film ever made in Korea, The Reef won the Film Advisory Board Award of Excellence and is a great display of saturated colors, nice underwater detailing, and anthropomorphic animation that endows every fish with an abundance of character while retaining its believability as a fish. The voice talent is good and includes Freddie Prinze Jr. as Pi, Evan Rachel Wood as Cordelia, Fran Drescher as Pearl, Donal Logue as Troy, and Rob Schneider as a variety of sea creatures including Nerissa. The story is engaging, but the whole film watches like a Finding Nemo knock-off with scenes like the pelican bobbing on the channel marker, the Portuguese Man of War that populate the West Indies current, and the wise old turtle Nerissa who teaches Pi so much about the ways of the sea. Similarities to Shark Tale also abound, the most obvious being one little fish's determination to stand up to the big bully shark. Appropriate for ages 3 and older, although the initial scene where Pi's mother and father are caught in a fishing net may prove upsetting to very young or sensitive children. --Tami Horiuchi

Peter Pan (Two-Disc Platinum Edition)

Peter Pan (Two-Disc Platinum Edition) Review

Peter Pan (Two-Disc Platinum Edition) Overview

Let your dreams take flight with Walt Disney's original classic. PETER PAN soars to new heights in the magical 2-disc Platinum Edition DVD with an all-new digital restoration. Fantastic adventures await Wendy and her brothers when Peter Pan, the hero of their stories, whisks them away to the magical world of Never Land. After following Peter and his feisty sidekick Tinker Bell past "the second star to the right and straight on till morning," they explore the island and Peter's secret hideout with the rambunctious Lost Boys and leap into high-flying battles with swashbuckling pirates and the infamous Captain Hook! Bursting with fantasy, adventure, and pixie dust, this 2-disc Platinum Edition includes three all-new games in Camp Never Land, deleted scenes, a new discovery -- in which Walt Disney reveals why he made PETER PAN -- and much more.

Peter Pan (Two-Disc Platinum Edition) Specifications

Peter Pan has a special place in the realm of classic animated Disney films: it instills an element of childlike wonder. The 1953 version of James M. Barrie's story is colorfully told and keeps on the straight and narrow of the book. Barrie's wondrous focus on child's play is the key to its longevity: kids who don't grow up, shadows that run away from their owners, pirates, a fairy, and the magic ability to fly. In short, you can't help wishing the adventure would happen to you. Fueled by a few memorable songs (the stunner being "You Can Fly") and the strong impression of the pixie fairy Tinkerbell and the goofy Captain Hook, Disney's version of this story neither supplants nor lessens the Broadway version with Mary Martin that was produced for television the same decade. Unlike some classics, Peter Pan never ages along the way. --Doug Thomas

The Sound of Music (45th Anniversary Blu-ray/DVD Combo Limited Edition) Overview

Experience the world's most beloved family film as never before with this 3-disc 45th Anniversary Edition of Rodgers & Hammerstein's® The Sound of Music, Winner of five 1965 Academy Awards®, including Best Picture!

In this true-life story, Julie Andrews lights up the screen as Maria, a spirited young woman who leaves the convent to bring love and music to the home of Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer) and his seven children.

The Sound of Music (45th Anniversary Blu-ray/DVD Combo Limited Edition) Specifications

When Julie Andrews sang "The hills are alive with the sound of music" from an Austrian mountaintop in 1965, the most beloved movie musical was born. To be sure, the adaptation of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's Broadway hit has never been as universally acclaimed as, say, Singin' in the Rain. Critics argue that the songs are saccharine (even the songwriters regretted the line "To sing through the night like a lark who is learning to pray") and that the characters and plot lack the complexity that could make them more interesting. It's not hard to know whom to root for when your choice is between cute kids and Nazis.

It doesn't matter. Audiences fell in love with the struggling novice Maria (Andrews), the dashing Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), and, yes, the cute kids, all based on a real-life World War II Austrian family. Such songs as "My Favorite Things," "Do Re Mi," "Climb Every Mountain," and the title tune became part of the 20th century Zeitgeist. In addition, The Sound of Music officially became a cult hit when audiences in London began giving it the Rocky Horror Picture Show treatment, attending showings dressed as their favorite characters and delivering choreographed comments and gestures along with the movie. --David Horiuchi

Awaken your senses to the majesty of SLEEPING BEAUTY, Walt Disney's classic fairy tale. See more than you've ever seen before through the magic of state-of-the-art technology, and experience this groundbreaking film restored beyond its original brilliance, in the way Walt envisioned it pristine, beautiful, utterly breathtaking. SLEEPING BEAUTY will transform your home into a fantastic world your family will want to experience again and again.

In the original story, Princess Aurora sleeps for 100 years before being awakened by a prince's kiss. In the Disney version, Prince Philip comes to her rescue much sooner.
George Brun's orchestral score, which was nominated for an Academy Award, expertly blended famous themes from Tchaikovsky's ballet.
With a budget that exceeded million in 1959, this was Walt Disney's most lavish and expensive animated feature to date.
Determined to make the characters as realistic as possible, Disney had a live action film shot with actors posing as Sleeping Beauty, the Prince, and Maleficent, for the animators to use.
New York Times critic Bosley Crowther called the fight between Prince Philip and Maleficent the noisiest and scariest go-round he (Disney) has ever put into one of his films.

Sleeping Beauty (Two-Disc Platinum Edition) Specifications

Disney's 1959 animated effort was the studio's most ambitious to date, a widescreen spectacle boasting a gorgeous waltz-filled score adapting Tchaikovsky. In the 14th century, the malevolent Maleficent (not dissimilar to the wicked Queen in Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs taunts a king that his infant Aurora will fatally prick her finger on a spinning wheel before sundown on her 16th birthday. This, of course, would deny her a happily-ever-after with her true love. Things almost but not quite turn out that way, thanks to the assistance of some bubbly, bumbling fairies named Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. It's not really all that much about the title character--how interesting can someone in the middle of a long nap be, anyway? Instead, those fairies carry the day, as well as, of course, good Prince Phillip, whose battle with the malevolent Maleficent in the guise of a dragon has been co-opted by any number of animated films since. See it in its original glory here. And Malificent's castle, filled with warthogs and demonic imps in a macabre dance celebrating their evil ways, manages a certain creepy grandeur. --David Kronke

On the DVD
Sleeping Beauty was the last and most lavish of Walt Disney's animated fairy tales. He told the artists not to hurry and to give him "a moving illustration": The film required almost four and one-half years and one million finished drawings. Instead of the 19th century storybook illustrations that had influenced the look of Snow White and Pinocchio, the artists adapted the flattened perspective and jewel-like colors of 15th century French illuminated manuscripts. The results remain unmatched for sheer visual opulence. However, Sleeping Beauty suffers from a weak story: the vision of an ageless princess slumbering in a vine-shrouded tower was replaced with elements of Snow White and a boy-meets-girl musical. The evil Maleficent and the three Good Fairies (Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather) dominate the film, rather than Princess Aurora and Prince Philip. Sleeping Beauty was originally released in 70mm, and the Blu-ray edition restores the film to its original splendor. (Many earlier releases trimmed the wide-screen images and/or muted the glowing palatte.) The Bonus DVD looks good on a flat screen monitor, but it pales in comparison to the richness of the Blu-ray. In addition to the commentaries and a making-of documentary, the set includes myriad extras that vary widely in quality. Nostalgia buffs will enjoy the recreation of the old Sleeping Beauty's Castle attraction in Disneyland, and the TV program "Four Artists Paint One Tree" provides a welcome showcase for key talents from the film. But the CG animation of the dragon and the voice imitations of the Good Fairies fail to capture the magic of the originals in the "Dragon Encounter"; the "Maleficent's Challenge Game"--a hi-tech Twenty Questions--sounds only vaguely like the redoubtable sorceress. (Rated G: violence) --Charles Solomon

Monsters, Inc. (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) Overview

From the Academy Award(R)-winning creators of TOY STORY (2001, Best Animated Short Film, "For the Birds") comes the computer-animated film that captured the hearts of fans and critics everywhere. Sulley and Mike do their best to return the girl home, but they face monstrous intrigue and some hilarious misadventures along the way. MONSTERS, INC., is "supremely clever -- fun for kids and adults alike" (CBS-TV). Monsters, Inc. (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) Specifications

The folks at Pixar can do no wrong with Monsters, Inc., the studio's fourth feature film, which stretches the computer animation format in terms of both technical complexity and emotional impact. The giant, blue-furred James P. "Sulley" Sullivan (wonderfully voiced by John Goodman) is a scare-monster extraordinaire in the hidden world of Monstropolis, where the scaring of kids is an imperative in order to keep the entire city running. Beyond the competition to be the best at the business, Sullivan and his assistant, the one-eyed Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal), discover what happens when the real world interacts with theirs in the form of a 2-year-old baby girl dubbed "Boo," who accidentally sneaks into the monster world with Sulley one night. Director Pete Doctor and codirectors David Silverman and Lee Unkrich follow the Pixar (Toy Story) blueprint with an imaginative scenario, fun characters, and ace comic timing. By the last heart-tugging shot, kids may never look at monsters the same, nor artists at what computer animation can do in the hands of magicians. --Doug Thomas
