In Reunion!, folks come home to Hazzard and discover a plot to turn Hazzard Swamp into a theme park...leaving the swamp critters high and dry. Before you can say wait a durn minute, the cousins are back in the General Lee, tearing up the roads to stop the nefarious scheme. Then they head west for Hazzard in Hollywood and a big-time recording deal. It turns out the deal includes a Russian mobster, a sultry songstress from the 'hood, and a beautiful blonde vice'mayor with the hots for Enos. Double the Dukes - double the down home fun!

The Dukes of Hazzard: Reunion! (1997) revels in all the basic pleasures of this classic good ol' boy TV series: fast cars, bar fights, police cars colliding in midair, and pretty girls who bend over a lot in cutoff shorts. Almost the whole cast reunites--Bo Duke (John Schneider) has become a racecar pilot; Luke Duke (Tom Wopat) has become a smoke jumper; and Daisy Duke (Catherine Bach) has become a motorcycle-riding PhD in ecology. Along for the ride are Cooter (Ben Jones), who's become a congressman, Enos (Sonny Shroyer), who's become an L.A. police detective, and Uncle Jesse (Denver Pyle), who's just the same ornery old coot he ever was. A wily con woman named Mama Jo Max (Stella Stevens, star of the original Nutty Professor and the original Poseidon Adventure) has teamed up with Sheriff Rosco (James Best) to turn the beloved local swamp into a theme park, and the Duke boys agree to drive the General Lee (the show's trademark red Dodge Charger, which was more popular than the human stars) in a race to protect the endangered land. Naturally, there are double-crosses on top of double-crosses and all the down-home high jinks you could ask for. Written by the creator of the original show, Reunion! doesn't have a lot of surprises, but who watches The Dukes of Hazzard for surprises? This is comfort television, pure and simple, and fans of the show will take plenty of comfort. However, the less said about Hazzard in Hollywood (2000), the better. This hodgepodge of contrived plotting, clumsy dialogue, and inane supporting characters hoped to revive the franchise with a new recurring villain to replace the late, lamented Boss Hogg (Sorrell Booke), but the results are dismal--which only highlights how successfully Reunion! captures the flavor of the original show. --Bret Fetzer

A major undertaking for Turner Classic Movies, Moguls & Movie Stars attempts nothing less than its subtitle announces: a history of Hollywood. Across seven hour-long episodes, this documentary miniseries cruises through the major developments of the cinema, with a particular emphasis on how the studio system came to be (and came to collapse). There's even material on the days of pre-cinema--the first episode actually begins in 1889, before moving pictures could be projected on the screen. Even with all that time available to writer-producer Jon Wilkman and his consultants, this is a selective pass through the material; much is left out or glossed over, and certain iconic movie stars stand in for the many left unmentioned. The weight is on those moguls, the ambitious men--mostly hungry immigrants--who saw an opportunity in Southern California's orange groves and created the amazing, vertically integrated system that operated as a "dream factory" for a few silvery decades. The life stories of Louis B. Mayer, Sam Goldwyn, William Fox, and other front-office titans thread through the series, perhaps as a corrective to past Hollywood chronicles that foregrounded the movie star or the director as the real story of the company town. Wilkman also makes sure we know about the indie films of African-American pioneer Oscar Micheaux and the remarkable contributions of female filmmakers of the early silent era, whose stories have often been left out of these accounts. In truth, there won't be much new here for Hollywood history buffs, given the need to hit the high points and then move on to the next thing, but less hardcore enthusiasts will get a pleasant, quick-moving overview. Many talking heads pop up, historians (David Thomson brings his keen critic's gaze to Clark Gable) and insiders (Richard Zanuck, Peter Bogdanovich) alike; the narration is provided by Christopher Plummer, whose patrician tone seems oddly mismatched to this tale of immigrants and scrappers gambling on a disreputable business. Think of the brothers Warner making a fateful decision to sell their father's horse and buy a projector--movie history turns on such risks, and Moguls & Movie Stars has a stack of such stories. --Robert Horton

The crime film genre of Hollywood has always proved popular with the public audience. Sidney Tolar took on the role of a film of eleven 20th Century Fox, produced until 1942, when Tolar also purchased the film rights and began a new series of Charlie Chan movies with monogramPictures.

Starring Roland Winters in the role after the death of the tolar and the series continued for another six films. Unfortunately, the quality of movies has been drastically downhill after Tolar buy the film rights.

As far as the same character, Detective Charlie Chan worked for the Honolulu Police Department, was married and had fourteen children, often with reference to the oldest as the "son number one." At a time when most Asians like car wash, home boy, or thoughtonly bad standing, Chan as a positive example for Asians. Other popular crime series included Mr. Moto, the Thin Man series (along with Sherlock Holmes, my favorite) and Bulldog Drummond.

As they were centuries in the first half of the 20th, based on Hollywood detective films continue to appear on the screen on a regular basis, and will continue to owe their initial success of this humble. And 'the appeal of mystery that continues to entertain the audiencecoming back for more.
