Jack & The Beanstalk (2010) (Ws Sub Ac3 Dol)

Jack & The Beanstalk (2010) (Ws Sub Ac3 Dol) Review

I wanted to jump into this and write a review mostly because of the overt hostility of two of the current reviewers. I guess I am at a loss for their angst. We rented it and my three kids (4,6,8) really liked it so we wanted to buy it and I stumbled on the horrible reviews. Another reviewer has done a nice job summarizing the story and characters but the brief review: This is a fun and family friendly movie for the late preschool crowd and up (the giant and his henchman might be scary for some early preschoolers or toddlers but they are overall pretty mild). It is not Shakespeare, it is not an action movie, it is simply a silly and fun little take on the Jack and the Beanstalk story. If you want something else or expect it, you will be disappointed. Yes the goose who lays the golden egg is Gilbert Gottfried but to comment on the one reviewers anger, I really think they cast a man in the role because Gilbert has such a distinctive voice and is recognized from many other children's characters especially birds like Cyberchase-Digit and Aladdin-Iago). I do not believe it should be a call to arms to boycott the movie. Sure they could have found a great female and sure it was a little weird having a male goose lay an egg but he did a great job and my kids did not make anything of it. I think there were some clever ideas thrown in there. The "COW" he sells is a computer game system like a playstation (COW is an acronym). Chevy Chases character is funny. The idea of Jack's dad being a hero by sacrifice is in there, also Jack does not know this initially so he is told by everyone he will amount to nothing but he overcomes this and believes in himself, making others believe in him as well. Not bad. Anyway a fun, silly movie to watch with the family.

Jack & The Beanstalk (2010) (Ws Sub Ac3 Dol) Overview

A hilarious live-action family comedy.
A fairy tale character who is about to flunk out of fairy tale school, Jack must perform a heroic deed by Monday or fail miserably, just like his father before him. Anxious to make good, Jack sells his C.O.W. (Computer of Wonder) for a handful of magic beans and a mysterious book that records his adventures as he's having them. Accompanied by his sidekick Grayson -- a goose who ate a bean and underwent an amazing transformation -- Jack climbs the magic beanstalk to recover the fabled Harp of Destiny from the evil Giant who lives in the sky. Helping Jack on his perilous quest is the spunky Jillian, a fearless young girl whom Jack meets on his journey -- and who just may have a hidden agenda.

The Interpreter (Widescreen Edition)

The Interpreter (Widescreen Edition) Review

This movie is great. I really appreciated the fact that it is serious and thoughtful- not the overblown nonsense that I think the advertisements and whatnot made it out to be. There are several films that, while not direct comparisons in all ways, illuminate what I mean-- compare this film to "Shooter" or "The Siege". Those other movies are Hollywood nonsense all the way-- over-the-top, unrealistic, and cheesy. This movie, while also dealing with political intrigue, is completely realistic, at least in the way it treats the characters and their motivations. Perhaps some might argue that the individual "suspense" elements of plot are not very realistic, but the fine acting, script, and serious presentation give those elements more credibility than they might have if just considered on their own merits.

The film is measured, without a lot of dramatic music and flashy editing. It also treats the fictional political conflict, which could easily stand in for any number of real-world situations such as Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, or the Congo, very seriously and does a good job connecting human emotions with a type of conflict that most of us probably don't relate to very well here in the US.

The best thing about the movie is the acting by Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn. They are both utter professionals who clearly embraced their roles. Ms. Kidman is icy and enigmatic, but somehow still allows the viewer to feel her barely submerged pain and suffering. Mr. Penn is completely convincing as a consumate professional torn up by some inner demons.

Perhaps some viewers may not find this movie particularly "entertaining." It lacks the sensationalism and flash that audiences might expect. It also features some pretty miserable characters-- I don't think there's a single laugh in the whole film. The politics it deals with is the type most Americans would rather pretend don't exist- the continued suffering and strife of impoverished post-colonial African nations. It is however, a masterfully acted, technically accomplished, and thought-provoking movie, and a really tense thriller, as well.

The Interpreter (Widescreen Edition) Overview

Academy Award winners Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn star in the action-packed thriller, The Interpreter. In one of the hidden corridors of power at United Nations headquarters, translator Silvia Broome (Kidman) overhears a potentially explosive secret about a planned assassination attempt. But when federal agent Tobin Keller (Penn) investigates her claim and digs deeper into Silvia's dangerous past, he begins to question whether she is a victim - or a suspect. From Oscar-winning director Sydney Pollack comes the riveting, edge-of-your-seat story of international intrigue that Ebert & Roeper give "Two thumbs up!"

The Interpreter (Widescreen Edition) Specifications

Director Sydney Pollack delivers megawatt star power, high gloss, and political passion to The Interpreter, his first thriller since The Firm. With Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn delivering smooth, understated performances, the film more closely recalls Pollack's 1975 Robert Redford/Faye Dunaway paranoid thriller Three Days of the Condor, trading conspiratorial politicians for potential assassination in the United Nations General Assembly (this being the first film ever granted permission to use actual U.N. locations). Kidman plays a U.N. interpreter who inadvertently overhears hints of a plot to kill the reviled, tyrannical leader of her (fictional) African homeland; Penn is the Secret Service agent assigned to protect her, or to determine her role (if any) in the assassination scenario. By distancing itself from real-life politics, The Interpreter softens its potential impact as a thriller about contemporary globalization and threats to international peace, but the Penn/Kidman personal drama (between two people who gain a deep appreciation for shared anguish, without being artificially forced into romance) adds a richly human dimension to Pollack's expert handling of the thriller elements of a complex yet easily-followed plot. Indie-film stalwart Catherine Keener shines in her supporting role as Penn's sarcastic by sympathetic Secret Service partner. --Jeff Shannon

Fever Pitch (Boston Red Sox Curse Reversed Edition)

Fever Pitch (Boston Red Sox Curse Reversed Edition) Review

I recently purchased this item. I got it because I am a hardcore Red Sox fan... still can't believe I didn't buy this before!

The plot is quite simple... boy meets (out his league) girl, girl falls in love, and then... the worst thing ever... he's a baseball obsessed guy!!! Ok, ok, a bit of a twist. What I loved about this movie, it gives a parallels of what was going on in my life that year. The best thing about this film was that it was shot "real time" meaning they had two endings, one where the Sox lost, and the actual ending (YAY!)

If you're a Red Sox fan, get ready to relieve all those moments, the losses the wins (that FANTASTIC win against NEW YORK YANKEES!), as much as it is a chick-flick, baseball is a big (huge) part of the movie... so guys will enjoy it as well. Funny, lovable characters. Drew Barrymore doing what she does best: making us fall in love with her. Jimmy Fallon, as the adorable crazy fan! (the scene where he's at Spring Training is EPIC! hahaha). All in all, great movie, simple plot, funny. One of those no-brainer movies that we like watching when we don't really want our brain to work haha.

Fever Pitch (Boston Red Sox Curse Reversed Edition) Overview

According to Red Sox super-fan Ben Wrightman (Jimmy Fallon), finding romance is about as likely as his beloved team winning the World Series. But when Ben scores a beautiful new girlfriend (Drew Barrymore), suddenly anything is possible. Now the two passions in his life have a chance to go all the way... if he doesn't strike out first.

Fever Pitch (Boston Red Sox Curse Reversed Edition) Specifications

The Farrelly brothers continue their good-natured winning streak with Fever Pitch, a romantic comedy charmed by fate and last-minute improvisation. The movie was originally written with a bittersweet ending, but something unexpected happened (kismet, or perhaps divine intervention?) when the Boston Red Sox scored miraculous victories in the 2004 playoffs and World Series, and Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon were there, in character, to celebrate love and baseball as a pair of amiable lovers who learn to share their lives while accommodating Fallon's life-long passion for the Red Sox. You really have to love baseball to forgive the formulaic romance by veteran Hollywood screenwriters Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel (who also wrote A League of Their Own, and could write this stuff in their sleep), but the codirecting Farrellys make it work, along with the easygoing chemistry of Barrymore and Fallon. The movie bears little resemblance to Nick Hornby's source novel (which was more faithfully adapted as a 1997 British comedy starring Colin Firth), but anyone who enjoyed High Fidelity or About a Boy will recognize Hornby's keen understanding of men and women, and the hazards we all endure when playing the game of love. --Jeff Shannon

National Security

National Security Review

I actually have this on DVD too but I wanted the HD version of the movie, and when I heard the announcement that it was being released on BluRay, I nearly shat myself lol! Get it!

-WE$J

National Security Overview

Earl (Martin Lawrence) and Hank (Steve Zahn) can't seem to escape each other. They met on opposite sides of the law during a routine traffic stop but now they've been thrown together to bust a million dollar smuggling operation. As hare-brained as their plan may be, these unlikely partners might just solve a crime... if they don't kill each other first.

National Security Specifications

Although it's enjoyable as a brainless diversion, National Security is one of those forgettable entertainments that denies its own considerable potential. It's a police action comedy in the mold of Beverly Hills Cop, tailored to the buddy-flick formula and laced with racial tensions of the post-Rodney King era. It's set in Los Angeles, where dedicated cop Hank (Steve Zahn) does jail time for allegedly beating Earl (Martin Lawrence), whose only real assailant was an overzealous bumblebee. As fate and lazy screenwriting would have it, the two adversaries reunite as security guards, teaming up to crack a team of violent smugglers led by bleached-blonde Eric Roberts (further proof that this movie's got nothing new to offer). Routine stunts distract from the comedy's mostly untapped resource: Lawrence pointedly riffs on racial profiling, and his prolific ad-libs play well against Zahn's by-the-book straight man. If their partnership had been allowed to develop more believably, National Security might have been more than a blip on the box-office radar. --Jeff Shannon

Get Rich Or Die Tryin' (Widescreen Edition)

Get Rich Or Die Tryin' (Widescreen Edition) Review

all i can say is that after seeing this movie, it will def. make u look @ 50 in a diff. light. this is an awesome story on the life of Curtis Jackson, who later became 50 Cent. makes u sympathize with his character & later on,clebrate is life & success (in real life)although alot of the story has been changed, added or removed, it it very entertaining. this man went through alot & I feel his success is well desrved. i could def watch this movie over & over again

Get Rich Or Die Tryin' (Widescreen Edition) Overview

Marcus (50 Cent) has always known he was going to be a rapper. But when his mother is murdered, young Marcus turns to dealing drugs for New York crime boss Majestic to pay the bills. As dealing turns to gang banging, however, Marcus finds his life spinning out of control, eventually landing in prison. While there, he decides to quit hustling and dedicate himself to his music…but by turning his back on Majestic, he may have signed his own death warrant. Terrence Howard co-stars in this hard-hitting story based on 50 Cent’s transformation from gangster to rapper, an unforgettable ride from tragic beginning to triumphant end.

Get Rich Or Die Tryin' (Widescreen Edition) Specifications

In Get Rich or Die Tryin', rapper Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson presents himself as a rap superhero, encased in muscular flesh like armor, his face impassive as a mask, reaching out to destroy his enemies with his unique talent. The plot, though based on Jackson's life, is standard--a gangster breaks from his youthful life of crime to triumph as a rapper--but there's vitality in the details: Jackson's girlfriend helps him pull free the wires holding his jaw shut when he's recovered from being shot in the face; a startling, brutal fight by naked men in a prison shower. Jackson even has his comic-book moment of transformation when a razor blade is thrown into his cell, encouraging him to kill himself; instead, he uses it to carve his rhymes into the walls. Unfortunately, as an actor Jackson only has two sides, gangster hard or oddly childlike and vulnerable. This second aspect falls away from the movie as Jackson assumes power, leaving only the cold, impassive face of a tough guy. That's the fate of superheroes too--they become the mask they present to the world, which is both their dream and their fate. Terrence Howard (Crash, Hustle & Flow) livens things up as a volatile prison friend. Also featuring Bill Duke (Predator) as a raspy ganglord and Joy Bryant (Honey) as Jackson's girlfriend. Capably directed by Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In America). --Bret Fetzer

Moving Forward in 2010

Have you noticed all the stop smoking and weight loss products that have started to appear on TV?

And it's only a matter of time before we see the keep fit DVD's hitting our screens, and you know why that is don't you.

New Year Resolutions:

Yes, it's the time of year when we decide enough is enough and we vow to make changes. This can be for our health such as to stop smoking or lose weight or for our wealth and this is where so many companies try to take advantage of our 'weakness'.

Now let me tell you that you don't need to make a resolution to make things work, you just need to do one thing.

Take Action:

Look, I will be the first to admit I need to lose a bit of weight so I recently joined a gym and it's been going great and I feel much better in myself. However, I have not been for 3 weeks and at this time of year I don't intent to go until the New Year. Now let me tell you come January I will be going at least 3 times per week, possibly more, and I also intend to stay out of the biscuit cupboard as that is my real downfall.

That's not a resolution, that's taking action.

I also have a lot of plans in 2010 for my business and that starts on January the 8th when I move into my new office. I intend to help a lot more people move forward in 2010 but that's another newsletter for another day.

So how can you move forward in 2010?

My advice to you would be to make a plan and get a mentor. Really, it's that simple. Find someone you look up to and trust and find out if they have any form of coaching/mentoring program THEN FOLLOW THEIR ADVICE TO THE LETTER. Make yourself accountable to them, let them give you tasks to complete and deadlines to meet.

Look, if it were so easy to lose weight (that's what we're told) then why are there so many people overweight?

The same applies online, if it's so easy to make money online then why do most people struggle?

The real reason is just like losing weight making money online is not as easy as you think. However, make a plan and get someone to mentor you and you stand the most chance of success. Did you know most of the celebrities you see that lose weight then release a keep fit DVD hire a personal trainer to help them get fit. Just as they need someone to mentor them you need someone to mentor you.

X-Men (Widescreen Edition)

X-Men (Widescreen Edition) Review

The reason I use that statement as my review title is that, while this film is good, much like `Spider-Man' and `Batman Begins', this film is trumped massively by the sequel. That aside, this film is still very good for the genre that it finds itself in. Superhero movies can be hard to make because there are so many devoted fans to please, and there is no way that one can perfectly transfer a comic book to the big screen. Still, as far as they come, this is one of the better installments.

It's a shame that the third film was such a cluttered mess (it's still better than `Spider-Mess 3').

This film establishes the conflict between former friends Professor Xavier (Professor X) and Magneto, formerly known as Eric Lensherr. Lensherr, facing prejudice his entire life, suffers greatly at the hands of an unkind and unsympathetic human race, who regard mutants as below them and continue to misunderstand and mistreat them. Xavier and Lensherr, once comrades, are now rivals as their viewpoints on the world have begun to contradict one another. Xavier believes in patience, for he feels that humans are universally good and that they will learn to accept mutants as equals, but Lensherr has grown to despise humanity and feels that the only key to happiness would be a human-free (and mutant inhabited) world.

Thus sets the basis for the first installment in the X-Men franchise, and as Xavier's school for mutants and Magneto's band of thugs set off in search of the same girl, a young mutant named Rogue, chaos ensues.

That good kind of action sequence chaos.

When it comes to superhero films, the most important (or one of the most important) things to consider is the cast. You have leagues of devoted fans waiting to put a face to the hero they have followed for years, and so `nailing' that aspect of the film is key. For a film that is littered with heroes and villains, `X-Men' definitely has some inspired casting. For any fan of the comic, I think there was only ONE choice for Professor X, and they got that one right. Near unknowns (I say near because they weren't, and still aren't, BIG NAME stars) Famke Janssen and James Marsden filled out their respective roles very nicely (Janssen is a perfect Jean Grey) and Oscar winner Anna Paquin was the perfect choice for Rogue. Ian McKellen is perfect as Magneto, and while I find that Storm didn't have much to chew on, Berry was a nice (if a tad obvious) choice.

But seriously, this is the film that introduced Hugh Jackman to the world, and no matter how awesome the rest of the cast may be, Wolverine was the most important casting decision, and Jackman is absolutely outstanding!

It lacks the polish of `X2: United', but it sets a nice tone for the franchise and really works in the origin stories without feeling rushed, stuffed or forced. There is plenty of action, drama, romance and wit; and a naked blue Rebecca Romijn serves up some oddly stimulating eye-candy. For what it is, this movie is pretty great. I'd give it a solid B+, verging on an A-.

X-Men (Widescreen Edition) Overview

Born into a world filled with prejudice are children who possess extraordinary and dangerous powers - the result of unique genetic mutations. Cyclops unleashes bolts of energy from his eyes. Storm can manipulate the weather at will. Rogue absorbs the life force of anyone she touches. But under the tutelage of Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart), these and other outcasts learn to harness their powers for the good of mankind. Now they must protect those who fear them as the nefarious Magneto (Ian McKellen), who believes humans and mutants can never co-exist, unveils his sinsiter plan for the future!

X-Men (Widescreen Edition) Specifications

In a time when race and religion don't separate people, but extra powers and mutated characteristics do, two longtime friends, Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen) part ways, only to become rivals over the issue of how much patience they should have with "normal" people. Living lives that scare most humans lacking the "X-factor" (a special power such as telekinesis), they fight over changing the general population into mutants. Xavier decides to help mutants in a special school while waiting for humanity to be more accepting, while Magneto opts to change all "normal" people into mutants in order to create a mutant-only world. Leading a group of four powerful X-Men (and women) to rescue one lost girl (the mutant Rogue, played by Anna Paquin)--and the entire population of New York--Xavier recruits a new member to their group: Logan (Hugh Jackman), better known as Wolverine, joins the team with much reluctance, only to prove very valuable to the rescue effort.

Each member of the X-Men has mastered their special gift--the ability to create a storm (Storm, played by Halle Berry), telekinesis (Dr. Jean Grey, played by Famke Janssen), eyesight carrying laserlike destructive power (Cyclops, played by James Marsden), the ability to heal nearly any wound he sustains (Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman). The chemistry among these four sets the stage for some expert teamwork--and some hidden romance. The mutants' ensemble work drives the action sequences, such as in a train station battle with Magneto's crew--including Sabertooth (Tyler Mane), Toad (Ray Park), and Mystique (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos)--that unleashes a lot of destruction, thanks to the striking special effects.

You don't have to be a fan of the hugely popular X-Men comic books to enjoy Bryan Singer's film, which is loaded with creativity, cool effects, and characters complex enough to lift it above run-of-the-mill action films. And Singer sets the stage admirably for the sequels that could turn X-Men into the strongest comic-book franchise since Batman. --Sandra Levin

The Break-Up (Widescreen Edition)

The Break-Up (Widescreen Edition) Review

The Break-Up DVD Review
1 Disc Widescreen Edition (2006)

First off, a summary. Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston's characters have been dating for two years and we even get to watch how they first met. After that meeting, a photo slideshow begins and I have to say, that photographer is amazing. He caught all these adorable moments that you never get to have during your relationship because most of the time it's just the two of you. Honestly, who's taking these beautiful pictures?? Anyway, a typical day starts with a special dinner planned and they have a very typical couple fight. It heightens to a degree that provokes Aniston to call it quits. Thus the break-up begins.

Now watching this movie as a communication major was fascinating because it directly correlates to my knowledge of gender communication to a tee and I hope the professor is using this movie as a teaching tool. Now Jennifer Aniston is being the typical woman who does everything in the relationship in this case. She works all day, then cooks, cleans, and does all the things he wants to do when they go out. When she asks him to do a few simple things to help her out, just as a way of showing gratitude or appreciation, he turns her down. Unfortunately instead of coming right out and saying these things, she pulls out things like, "Why didn't you bring me twelve lemons like I asked?" or "We never go to the ballet." These are to hint at: You don't listen to me or seem to care about me the way I do you. She never spells it out. Women like to imply what they're saying instead of just saying it.

Vince Vaughn is the typical guy who has a great girl who does everything and he doesn't have to. He loves her but he works all day and believes he's entitled to some down time when he gets home. Which isn't a problem in itself. Then he gets "nagged" by Aniston to do a couple things and he sees it as her nagging him ALL the time and doesn't respect his need to veg out the way he likes to. What he's missing is that she worked all day too and is asking for some help. He needs plain english and takes everything she says literally. When she finally breaks up with him, he believes it's real and therefore if the relationship is over, there is nothing he can do, so he will defensively protect his domain and act like he doesn't care about her. The break-up was a ploy used by Aniston only to raise the stakes. She expected him to come after her, she waited by the door! If he cares, he'll try to save the relationship. He'll have a revelation, she believes. He thinks there is nothing to save and so he leaves.

What follows is an often funny, sometimes very sad downward spiral into competition and continued miscommunication. They both continue to raise the stakes and the more things Aniston tries to take away from him, the further he gets pushed away. She keeps hoping she'll take away one thing he cherished and he'll suddenly say, "Wow I miss my girlfriend, look at how my life sucks without her. I see it all now. I'll go apologize."

I have to say one of the best comedic devices I've seen in a long time is the acapella group, "The Tone Rangers". I laughed so hard I cried a little when I was in the theatre. Dan took me to see this movie on my birthday! :-) Seriously, how can you have a better line than, "You can't take a pitch pipe out of a man's hand when he's in the middle of a tasty groove!" The other funniest part of the movie is Vaughn playing an online video game with a headset connected to a twelve-year old boy and he keeps asking him if his mom is in the room crying at the devastation that is the score. Jason Bateman is very funny as their realtor friend who helps discuss the division of condo assets.

This is one of the best movies of that year and I can't believe Wedding Crashers got more hype. This is a great movie, particularly if you're in a relationship. Just don't let those arguments motivate more of your own. The movie SHOWS you how not to fall into that trap. Women need to be more direct and just say what they mean. Men need to listen and notice what women go through for them. End of story. I love this movie.

DVD Extras:

There is feature commentary with the director and also with both lead actors Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn. It is so rare to get a combination of actors on a commentary but so rewarding when you hear the in's and out's of how scenes came about and what was ad-libbed and where ideas came from. The outtakes for the movie are hysterical, but there is also a segment of improv between Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn that is so funny to see how quick they are and you'll wish all the good jokes could have been worked in to the movie. Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn improving out a scene to perfection and it is not only funny, but a good lesson on how movies come together for budding actors. There is a three brothers: tour of chicago and also deleted scenes and an alternate ending. The alternate ending is funny on its own but if it had been used in the movie, it would have left it on a weird, unfocused point. I highly recommend this DVD, stay away from Couples Retreat and get this instead.

The Break-Up (Widescreen Edition) Overview

The Break-Up (Widescreen Edition) Specifications

The combined star power of Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers, Swingers) and Jennifer Aniston (Bruce Almighty, The Good Girl) makes The Break-Up a high-profile romantic comedy. Gary (Vaughn) and Brooke (Aniston) find that their brittle relationship may have reached the breaking point--but neither is willing to give up the condo they co-own. As their fighting grows increasingly bitter, neither is sure if they're fighting to get out of the relationship or to save it. The Break-Up is an odd combination of realistic scenes that capture the harsh yet human ways that lovers can hurt each other, and broad comic scenes with a more farcical edge. Both types of scenes are entertaining on their own terms--the movie is never boring--but they don't fully mesh, and as a result it's hard to engage emotionally with either Gary or Brooke. But the sterling supporting cast--including Jon Favreau (Wimbledon), Cole Hauser (The Cave), Joey Lauren Adams (Chasing Amy), John Michael Higgins (A Mighty Wind), Justin Long (Dodgeball), Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), Vincent D'Onofrio (Happy Accidents), and the ever-delirious Judy Davis (Husbands and Wives)--give every scene they're in a boost of comic energy. An uneven but enjoyable movie that may suffer from viewers having overly high expectations due to Vaughn and Aniston's celebrity. --Bret Fetzer
