Epicenter

Epicenter Review

EPICENTER kicks off in high gear and maintains a frenetic pace that keeps the adrenaline pumping....and that's all I ask from a B action thriller. I don't expect great acting, or deep psychological motivations. This is a great popcorn movie. And some other interesting things about it:
*Gary Daniels, like fellow martial arts actors Chuck Norris, David Bradley, etc., will never win any Oscars. But this ruggedly handsome and quite different actor shows a deep desire to at least put as much as he can into his performance. In this one, he relies on this ability rather than his martial arts. He doesn't take his shirt off at all, and he has only one real fight scene, which is very brief.
*Traci Elizabeth Lords likewise won't make the world forget Meryl Streep or Sigourney Weaver, but given her background, her ability to rise even this far is commendable.
*It was good to see venerable character actor Henry Beckman again. As the old codger trapped in the elevator with the two kids, he and his parrot reminded me of those great older movies where actors like Beckman played such a fun, integral part.
*And in spite of everything, the movie has a happy ending without the lovers consummating their relationship.
It's a fundamentally adrenaline rush!

Shall We Dance? (Full Screen Edition)

Shall We Dance? (Full Screen Edition) Review

Existence precedes essence. I tango, therefore I am. John Clark seeks his essential being in a life of meaning and he is unhappy that he has not yet done so. He sees Paulina at the window of Miss Mitzi's Dance School and the sadness on her face matches the sadness in his soul. He decides to join the dance. His joy and his trouble begins. Finally his authentic self emerges in his essential self as a dancer. He gets the rhythm of the tango, and becomes that self that he truly is.

Is everyone with me? We see that Paulina and John are a handsome couple, especially when they dance to the tango, Santa Maria, as she gives him "one hour" to enliven him for the dance competition. Did John plan to leave his wife for Paulina? Honor prevents that sorry pass. Besides, he knows that a husband is like a roof on the house. Everyone in the family take him for granted and does not miss him until he is gone.

And yet, Paulina and John achieve an intimacy that is not about sex even if it is rooted in their being together as a woman and a man in harmony. They relate to each other in terms of the beat. Paulina instructs John, "Don't say anything, don't think and don't move unless you feel it."

The film Shall We Dance is alive with cross currents of electricity in the human condition. See this film and then you can sing with Walt Whitman "The Body Electric." Do even better and join the dance.

Shall We Dance? (Full Screen Edition) Overview

Golden Globe winner Richard Gere (Best Actor In A Musical Or Comedy, CHICAGO, 2002; UNFAITHFUL) and Jennifer Lopez (JERSEY GIRL, MAID IN MANHATTAN) step out in a delightfully sexy comedy with a sizzling all-star cast! John Clark (Gere) is a meek workaholic who feels trapped in a dull, mind-numbing existence. But one night, his whole life changes when the sight of a beautiful dance instructor (Lopez) inspires him to break out of his mold and sign up for ballroom dancing lessons! Now, he'll have to step lightly -- and do some fancy footwork -- if he expects to keep his exciting new passion a secret from his family and friends. Also starring Academy Award(R) winner Susan Sarandon (Best Actress, DEAD MAN WALKING, 1995) and Stanley Tucci (THE TERMINAL), SHALL WE DANCE? is another acclaimed crowd-pleaser from the studio that brought you CHICAGO!

Shall We Dance? (Full Screen Edition) Specifications

Something got lost in translation from 1996's critically acclaimed Japanese comedy, but the American remake of Shall We Dance? is not without charms of its own. In being transplanted from Tokyo to Chicago, the original version's subtle humor is shaken out of its cultural context, but this is an otherwise faithful adaptation in which a weary lawyer (Richard Gere) battles his mid-life crisis with ballroom dancing lessons, while his wife (Susan Sarandon) hires a private detective to see if he's cheating. Those expecting a Jennifer Lopez showcase will be disappointed; her role as the melancholy dance instructor keeps the beautifully lovelorn J-Lo on the sidelines, while a cast of standard-issue supporting characters (especially Stanley Tucci's clandestine faux-Latin dance lover) provide a generous dose of Hollywood-ized comic relief. All of this gives Shall We Dance? a polished sheen of mainstream entertainment that many viewers---and especially ballroom dancers--will find delightfully irresistible. --Jeff Shannon

Legionnaire

Legionnaire Review

I think this is direct to TV, I certainly never heard of it in the theaters.

Jean Claude Van Damme stars as a boxer who is supposed to throw a fight. When he meets his old girlfriend who he stiffed at their wedding he decides to run away with her. This doesn't work out and he decides to run away to join the French Foreign Legion. He knows that it is going to be bad going in but has to do it. I wish they would have explained a little more of exactly why he joined but that is really the only major flaw in the movie. The interaction between the main charcters who Jean Claude meets is the shining point in the movie. Adewale Akinnouye-Agbaje's(Oz, Lost) southern accent was odd to hear. It didn't fully work for me but it is always great to see him on screen. Everybody is great and they stick by each other no matter what and everybody just does a brilliant acting job overall. Jean Claude's facial expressions looked stiff for the most part but he was the worst of the bunch and still did pretty good for himself.

While fighting battles with no of chance winning, some of Jean Claude's past catches up with him but the heart of the story is between the main characters and the story remains that way until the end which was a good choice.

I was completely surprised this wasn't your standard B-action flick. It is actually a very good movie with great sets and superb battle scenes. The cinematography in the desert is one of the finer points of the movie. No stylized action and the movie is all the better for it. We don't need to see Jean Claude doing super kicks and taking out everybody who has a gun with his bare 2 hands. We have seen that way too many times. You could tell it was right at this point in his career that he wanted to start doing better movies and he has put out about 4 good movies since this. Things are definitely looking up for the man who's first starring role was in Ng See Yuen's 'No Retreat, No Surrender'(AKA Karate Tiger). The movie gets a 3.5 from me but I can only pick a 3 or a 4. I don't know if I would watch it again since I am a hardcore action junkie but it was damn good movie.

This is a great DVD release from Sterling Entertainment. Picture is widecreened in a letterboxed format. Only 2-channel sound but still pretty good.

Special features include a 7 minute behind the scenes. It has an interview with one of the producers where he talks about Jean Claude. It also has an interview with the director and you get a little bit of a look behind the scenes.

There is a French Foreign Legion section and has a good interview with an historian. This is very good information wise and briefly tells how the Legion came to be and a bit about what happens after this movie. Best special feature on here. Also in this section is a very brief recent look at the FFL, text given on descriptions of weapons used, and a still gallery of filming the movie.

There is also a commentary with the writer of the movie.

The back of the DVD case also says that it has a commentary from a FFL expert and I was very disappointed not to find that on the disc.

Legionnaire Overview

Exiled to a video-only release when its distributor balked after the flop of Jean-Claude Van Damme's previous film Knock Off, this lavish adventure deserved a chance at theatrical success. Action icon Van Damme recasts himself as a tragic romantic hero in this entertaining old-fashioned adventure with a modern sensibility. "The Muscles from Brussels" is no Brando, but he acquits himself nicely as a cocky boxer who double-crosses a Marseilles mobster and joins the French Foreign Legion when his half-baked plan backfires with tragic consequences. Surrounded by a better than usual cast (including Steven Berkoff as a Teutonic drill sergeant, Jim Carter as the ruthless ganglord, and Nicholas Farrell as a gentleman soldier with a taste for gambling and a dark past), Van Damme's dour performance sometimes gets lost in the colorful characters around him. But that's okay--there's adventure enough to go around and he's willing to share it. The Marseilles scenes evoke a quaint movie past with their smoky bars and shadowy streets, but the film is reborn as an ambitious, stoic platoon drama in the sands of French Morocco. Legionnaire alludes to classic films from Beau Geste to Casablanca to Lawrence of Arabia, but ultimately marches its own macho course, reveling in testosterone-driven heroics and bonding-under-fire while acknowledging the irony of its colonial mission ("We're the intruders," realizes one soldier). It's a calculated risk for Van Damme (who also cowrote and coproduced), but if Legionnaire never quite grasps the epic scope it's reaching for, it remains one of his best films, a handsome, exciting, and surprisingly grim desert adventure. --Sean Axmaker

The Red Violin (Movie Review)

Winner of the Academy Award for Best Music, Original Score (John Corigliano), The Red Violin should've at the very least received a Best Picture nomination. Overlooked by the arbiters of most of the major awards ceremonies, The Red Violin nonetheless enjoyed widespread critical acclaim. And every bit of its praise is well-deserved. Because The Red Violin belongs on a list of the best films of its decade...

Charles Morritz (Samuel Jackson) is called on by a Montreal auction house to assess the value of a recently procured violin. His initial reaction is that the violin is the long-lost, world famous Nicolo Bussotti "Red Violin". In verifying its authenticity, the film flashes back to the birth of the violin...

When famous Italian violin maker Nicolo Bussotti (Carlo Cecchi) witnesses the tragic death of his pregnant wife and true love, he designs the perfect violin as a testament to her memory. Originally intended for his son, the violin makes it way across the continent of Europe, first appearing in an orphanage where child prodigy Kaspar Weiss (Christoph Koncz) comes in possession of it. Ushered off to Vienna and poised on the precipice of worldwide fame, Weiss suffers a heart attack, and the violin is buried with him. However, when his grave is looted, gypsies give a home to the violin for some time before it is purchased by the mad genius Frederick Pope (Jason Flemyng). When Pope injures the heart of his longtime lover Victoria (Greta Scacchi), the violin is damaged by a bullet...

A servant of Pope's eventually takes the violin to the Asian Continent where it is used first as a teacher's aide, then hidden during the Communist revolution which fears the evils of 'Western music'. When the Shanghai violin collector in possession of the red violin passes away, the Chinese government places his multi-million dollar collection on the auction block. Finding the red violin in its midst, two experts work to verify its authenticity, and when they do a fierce bidding war takes place to see who will get the prized possession. But an article of such great value can only be held by someone who truly appreciates its beauty...

With outstanding performances from an unprecedented number of actors and actresses, The Red Violin is a production of genius on par with the perfection of its lead character - the hand-crafted red violin. Samuel L. Jackson is the only star of the film who's of Hollywood blockbuster caliber, and he shines brightly in his role - using his penetrating eyes to convey a sort of mystic power upon the object of his desire. Coupled with an original storyline, having all the more of an impact due its suspenseful chronology, The Red Violin is an unforgettable film of passion and adventure...

Boasting a well-written screenplay, and direction that displays all the symbolism and emotion expected from a classic novel, The Red Violin is a film that strives to touch the polarities of the human soul. With an emotional passion that emanates from the screen, the film forces us to contemplate the wonder of human existence and what exactly will be our individual place in its history. A modern day epic regarding the travels of a beautiful blood-red violin through various centuries of the human experience, The Red Violin is a definite must-see film...

Top Disney Pixar - 2010 Movie Favorites

Disney Pixar has a way of making movies that appeal to just about everyone, of every age. It would be next to impossible to personally choose what I think would be the Top Disney Pixar movies - my family and I love a number of them and call them each a "favorite". However, in terms of overall popularity, there can be a such thing as picking a "best" list.

With that in mind, here are the Top 5 Disney Pixar movies coming into the year 2010:

1. Disney Pixar Up - This movie is the most recently released on DVD and involves a retired (and rather elderly) balloon salesman who decides to "beat the system" and go on the ride of his life - with balloons! A very cute film, with some funny moments as well as some truly touching ones.

2. Pixar Toy Story - I believe that this is the first of the Pixar movies, and is obviously still a favorite since it remains toward the top of the list of popular movies for kids and family. Always a good pick to watch - especially if you feel like you need a good laugh!

3. Toy Story 2 - The follow-up to the first Toy Story movie, this film has a unique storyline that is just as entertaining as the first. There are some funny new characters as well, and has some dramatic moments that take the viewers from laughter to being "on the edge of their seats".

4. Monsters Inc. - The Monsters Inc movie comes next in line in popularity this year. It has a story that is unlike any other I've seen, with a merging of two separate worlds that kids sometimes even have nightmares about, but with the world of the "monsters" not actually being scary at all.

5. Pixar Finding Nemo - Here is a story that will likely always be a favorite for kids and families to watch. An adorable story about a "little boy" clown fish who years for more personal freedom and a father who is afraid to bend the rules. Very sweet, truly funny as well.

There are (of course) more movies from the Disney Pixar lineup - and I understand that more will be released this year! However, if you are looking for a great movie for kids and families to watch you will be hard pressed to beat the list above of Top Disney Pixar movies for 2010.

Driving and Children

Driving with children in your car can prove to be a challenge, as it is to most new parents. However, this task is not impossible. What you need to be aware of when you are traveling with children is that they tend to get bored easily. This is why it is important to make sure that you always bring something entertaining to keep your children occupied. By distracting your children in this way, you are helping to prevent them from distracting you from what you need to do: drive.

Depending on the age of your child, you might try to bring a couple of toys with you on the car ride. The amount of items that you bring will also depend on where you are traveling to as well as how long the car ride is going to be. For instance, a car ride from Florida to New York might require more toys than a car ride from Baltimore to Pennsylvania. Again, parents need to exercise caution as well as discretion in the kinds of toys they choose to bring as entertainment for their kids. A toddler might accidentally or unknowingly throw a toy towards the front of the car, striking the driver and/or passenger. Therefore, softer toys that won't cause damage may be in order. However, if your child is older and has an appreciation for holding onto their toys, you may consider allowing your child to choose one or two of his or her favorite toys to bring along on the car ride.

Within the past few years, one of the biggest lifesavers to parents everywhere has been the invention of the DVD player in cars. Not only this, but you can now purchase portable DVD players to take with you no matter where you go. Videos are one of the greatest distractions towards keeping your children safe because movies are engaging for children at certain ages. Important to remember here is to choose the age appropriate movie for your child. Especially if you have multiple children in your vehicle of varying age ranges, always opt for the lowest level DVD or movie to keep everyone happy and appropriately entertained.

Besides DVDs and movies, some parents get creative and come up with fun games that kids can play when they are in the car for long periods of time. Singing songs or leaving it up to the child's imagination can be a lifesaver.

How to Choose Movie Organizer Software

When you decide to keep your DVD collection organized by using movie organizer software, there are some questions you should ask yourself before deciding which program to buy.

How Much Do I Want to Spend?

You can download free software to make lists and keep track of any number of things, so you don't have to spend any money at all. But as with most things in life, you get what you pay for. Free movie organizer software is probably designed to organize a collection generically-you can use it to list books, for instance, or a bottle cap collection. It's just a database that's started for you-you fill in the rest.

You can probably even find free or very cheap movie organizer software, designed for a movie collection. But it's still going to be little more than a preset database just for movies. You can do that with any office software yourself. And it's going to take a long time to enter even an average-sized collection. You'll want to stick with titles only to keep it from becoming a time-eating project.

Now consider how much money you have invested in your movie collection, and how much you enjoy it. Also consider how it's worth finding an affordable but full-featured movie organizer program that you'll have fun using, enters movie information for you quickly and easily, and looks like an online catalog of movies, complete with DVD cover images. The convenience alone makes this type of software worth the price, but the fun factor makes it the type of movie organizer software no movie lover should be without.

How Much Time Do I Have?

If money isn't the make-or-break factor in choosing movie organizer software, then convenience should be. How many movies do you have? How long will it take you to enter just the titles into simple database software, or a database of your own making? Are you really going to want to enter all the information you'd probably like to have at your fingertips?

How much better would it be if the movie organizer software did all that for you, with a few clicks? How much time can you save? Choose full-featured software so you can spend less time organizing the database, and more time watching your movies!

Who Makes the Software?

While some people naturally find the biggest software manufacturer and choose their products without much thought, or they search online and find whatever looks okay to them, you'd be wise to consider the software company that makes the movie organizer software. Huge corporations can't compete with smaller companies when it comes to personal customer service. Is the software updated often? Are there forums so you can interact with other customers? Choose movie organizer software with all the features you want from a company that supports its products and cares about its customers, then if you do encounter a problem, you know you can find the help you need.

Download Free DVD Movies

Is it really possible to download free dvd movies from the internet? Despite the fact that you will receive a couple of million results for popular search terms like "download free dvd movie" you will find that there really are not many websites that will offer you free downloads. This should be avoided anyway as these free websites most often than not contain illegal and pirated software which could get you into a lot of trouble if you download them.

Apart from this there is also the chance that your pc can become infected with spyware or adware which will corrupt your operating system. Sometimes you will even find that the files people upload will be erroneous and will not work properly. Image taking a couple of days to download a favourite dvd movie only to find out that the file is low quality with poor sound. To avoid this you should make use of pay per download services which offer you the ability to download free dvd movies which are not pirated, contain no spyware and are not corrupted in any way. Lots of people are skeptical as to the authenticity of these services but they are legal.

I have done my fair bit of searching for these types of websites and can personally recommend netmoviedownloads as they offer the cheapest membership fees which allow you to get access to unlimited movie downloads which you can enjoy at home. So if you can't find that DVD in the store or online you might want to check out this service and review their options.

Episode Summary of the Hit Comedy TV Show, The Office

Most likely a majority of people in the United States at this point have seen at least one episode or part of an episode of the popular NBC television show, The Office that is how popular the show has become in recent years. Some of the shows catchphrases have even filtered into the mainstream lingo, with lots of young people all over the country using boss Michael Scott, played by Steve Carell, famous phrase "that is what she said". The show has had episodes revolving around all kinds of topics, many of which ring true to people in the world of business for real. One such episode that may hit home to business employees; is the two part episode where the members of the office have to compete against other branches to lose weight, which of course includes standing on weighing scales certainly not a gram scale.

There are many other plotlines on the weight loss episode and one of them includes Jim, the office jokester who is constantly playing pranks on his rival Dwight, being upset that his girlfriend and company receptionist Pam is off in New York. In a previous episode, Pam had decided to go to New York City to go to art school, which was an interest that the character had held and not explored in previous seasons when she was with her old fiancé, Roy.

Most of the episode shows the employees working hard at losing weight so that they can get extra days off courtesy of corporate. However, somebody brings down the team's effort by over eating, something that happens at all the other branches as well. In an effort to make the contest more appealing, corporate decides to increase the days off being offered as part of the prize, which results in one of the characters on the show saying that maybe if they all stay fat for long enough they can get an entire month off.

Another funny subplot of the episode sees office weirdo Dwight trying to get the more husky members of the office to lose weight forcefully. Dwight mentions to Phyllis, a more rotund member of the staff, that there is a sale that he needs help with and offers to split commission with her. As it turns out, Dwight drives Phyllis to a remote location about five miles away from the office and pushes her out of the car and then drives away, thus forcing Phyllis to walk back and lose weight.

At the end of the second part of the episode something that viewers had been waiting for a while to see happens when Jim finally proposes to his girlfriend Pam. At the very end, after trying to turn up the heat in the office and sweat off the weight they need to win, the group weighs in and finds out they did not win the competition and were beaten only by a few pounds. The episode ends when the only black man in the office describes how he has had a great summer anyway and the final shot is of him doing a pose with one fist in the air on the scale like that at the 1968 Olympic Games.

The Lion King (DVD) Review

Winner of two Academy Awards for Best Music, both Original Score and Original Song, The Lion King would have won Best Picture had it not been an animated film. Arguably the greatest full-length animated Disney feature of all time, The Lion King is a drama of epic proportions, and a film that forever extended the boundaries of the animation genre. Hans Zimmer creates an original score that is second to none in cinematic history, and Elton John's hit single "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" swept the nation upon the film's release. With powerful and often mesmerizing visual sequences, the use of a timeless plot device, and brilliant direction, the film will stand the test of time as one of the best movies ever produced.

The Lion King takes place in Pride Rock, a serene jungle paradise on the African plain. In Pride Rock, every animal lives as part of a harmonious ecosystem, ruled by the greatest animal of all, the strongest and wisest lion, King Mufasa. When Mufasa's wife gives birth to the lion cub Simba, the young heir's Uncle Scar begins plotting the overthrow of his brother and the taking of the kingdom by force. Forming a conspiracy with a pack of wild hyenas, Scar's evil plan is to lure Simba and Mufasa into a valley where the hyenas stir up a herd of wildebeests which end up trampling Mufasa and leaving him clinging for his life on the edge of a cliff. With his Mufasa's life hanging in the balance, Scar seizes the opportunity to send his brother hurling to a bloody death.

With the king gone, and Simba too young to defend the kingdom, Scar and the hyenas ascend to power. Pride Rock is soon reduced to a desolate wasteland as its newest rulers ravage the landscape, while Simba is forced into exile. Fleeing to a faraway land free of predators, Simba befriends Pumbaa and Timon, a warthog and meerkat who live carefree lives feasting on grubs and insects. But as time passes, a chance encounter reunites Simba with his childhood destiny. Can Simba return to Pride Rock and reclaim his rightful position as king, or will he succumb to the temptations of an easy life, free from conflict and responsibility?

Widely considered the greatest animated film in Disney's arsenal, and certainly the best of the computer-generated era, The Lion King is a cinematic masterpiece in any medium. If you tend to shy away from animated films as childlike or simply just not your cup of tea, you would be well advised to make an exception for The Lion King. It's quite simply an extraordinary epic, replete with dazzling choreography, well-blended musical scores, and characters the audience loves to root for. In one particular scene, the Disney animators' use of Leni Riefenstahl's patented camera angles to capture the hyenas marching in lock-step under the singular review of Scar creates an abundance of subconscious images reminiscent of Hitler and the Third Reich.

This illusion plants a manifestation of evil in the mind of the viewer that is instantly connected to Scar and his evil intentions... That's the type of symbolic and all-engrossing power Disney utilizes in this wonderful masterpiece - loved by children, yet a deeply probing and breathtaking film for adult audiences. A perfect 10 of a movie...

The Swarm

The Swarm Review

Disaster films are kind of a discredited genre but there's something aesthetically satisfying about things blowing up real good. Another guilty pleasure to these flicks is guessing which members of the paycheck mode star-studded cast members are going to buy the farm. "The Swarm" isn't classic stuff but it kept me entertained even at 155 minutes. If I were to nutshell the movie I would describe it as "The Birds" with killer bees without Hitchcock's artistry. The pre-CGI visuals are quite good and director Irwin Allen ratchets the tension quite nicely. The acting here is perfunctory but movie's like this aren't meant for the award shows. No-think entertainment of the best kind.

The Swarm Overview

Irwin Allen's doomsday epic pits an all-star cast against a North American invasion of killer bees!

The Swarm Specifications

Legendarily chintzy "event" producer Irwin Allen (The Towering Inferno) went out with a gargantuan buzz-on with this jaw-droppingly goofy disaster flick. No cliché is left unturned, as a hyperactive strain of hallucination-inducing killer bees get it into their microscopic brains to derail a commuter train, destroy a nuclear power plant, and otherwise decimate a veritable cornucopia of washed-up Match Game panelists (Fred MacMurray, Henry Fonda, Richard Widmark, Patty Duke, Slim Pickens, and narcoleptic dreamboat Richard Chamberlain are just a few of the legendary has-beens to get fatally stung by what appears to be airborne coffee grounds). Be sure to stay tuned through the closing credits for a (lawsuit-preventing?) coda absolving the good ol' hardworking American honeybee of any and all sinister charges depicted herein. An irresistibly hilarious chunk of honey-roasted cheese--'70s style. --Andrew Wright

Mean Girls (Movie Review)

One of the funniest films of 2004, Mean Girls ranks among some of the best high school comedies of all time. Right up there with Clueless, Fast Times At Ridgemont High, and American Pie, Mean Girls has some of the most hilarious comic scenes of the decade. Written by Saturday Night Live mainstay Tina Fey (who also stars as a teacher in the film), Mean Girls is supposed to chronicle some of the author's personal experiences in the social world of academics. Irrespective of its similarities to real life, Mean Girls is a light-hearted comedy with likeable characters, and it's just plain funny...

Lindsay Lohan plays Cady Heron, a previously home-schooled, sixteen year old daughter of two world-traveling anthropologists. When her parents decide to settle down, Cady attends public school for the first time in her life. While there, she befriends social outcasts Janis Ian (Lizzy Caplan) and Damian (Daniel Franzese) who tell her all about the inner-workings of their high school. Cady learns about The Plastics, a group of three girls who compose the social elites of the school. The previous beneficiary of Plastics leader Regina's wrath, Janis longs for the day when she can exact revenge on her former best friend from eighth grade.

When The Plastics - Regina George (Rachel McAdams), Gretchen Wieners (Lacey Chabert), and Karen Smith (Amanda Seyfried) - take a liking to Cady and give her an exclusive invitation to eat lunch with them, Janis sees her opportunity for revenge. She concocts a plan to send Cady into the world of The Plastics as an "undercover agent," and together, Cady, Janis, and Damian work to dig up dirt on the girls. However, the line between pretend and reality starts to blur for Cady, souring her relationship with Janis. And Cady's affection for Regina's former boyfriend Aaron (Jonathan Bennett) threatens to create a permanent chasm between the two girls... Throw in a showdown between two groups of math-letes, and you've got yourself quite a movie!

As the lead character, Cady, Lindsay Lohan portrays a very likeable person, an intelligent, sweet girl who experiences her first foray into the world of public school. The audience's ability to identify with and like Cady makes it easier to enjoy a film where she alienates two groups of high school clicks and virtually everyone else around her. Meanwhile, Rachel McAdams (rising Hollywood star and lead from The Notebook) is brilliant in her performance as the socially aggressive, backstabbing Regina George.

Mean Girls is a classic Darwinian high school comedy, similar to the hit TV show Freaks And Geeks, except with a little less edge. If you enjoyed the high school comedy films of the 1980's, like Can't Buy Me Love, then you'll thoroughly enjoy Mean Girls. With a well-written screenplay and supporting appearances by Saturday Night Live regulars Tina Fey and Tim Meadows, Mean Girls is a hilarious comedy and a definite must-see film...

Movie Review - The Ugly Truth (2009)

If you want to see a dirty version of When in Rome, watch The Ugly Truth. It is your typical romance set in the world of shock news casting? Maybe I'm really out of it, but come on. How ridiculous is this?

The acting was fine, and the story was okay, too. But, surely for just the shock value, the continual explicit sexual punch lines left this movie trite and quite common place.

This movie could have been a lot better if they would have worked on the plot more - but, even with that said - I did watch the entire movie. So it does have some redeeming value to it, though not much.

Maybe I'm just a little too jaded to enjoy romantic movies anymore. I'm probably the guy, at any rate, who had given up on dating and relationships. Wait a minute, I AM the guy. As much as this movie tries, in a really awkward way, to claim there is that "one" person out there for everyone or that relationships do work, it left me bored about half way through, wanting something different. When in Rome, I thought, had much more plot, even though it was not at all original. The Ugly Truth is, actually, not ugly - its just unoriginal.

I would not recommend this movie, even though it was well filmed and has talented acting in it. It's just way too typical, looking for cheap laughs, simply because the writing isn't able to carry it over. Run. Run.

16 Blocks (Widescreen Edition)

16 Blocks (Widescreen Edition) Review

The Amazon synopsis does justice to the movie. An otherwise-routine plot lifted from "The Guantlet" instead turns into a great suspense flick. The casting was perfect. Mos Def annoyed the hell out of me for the first ten minutes but by the time the first guy gets shot, he had me hooked. Like all well-written suspense movies, the plot moves briskly and the characters are not dumber than the audience.

But if this were just a well-written and -directed cop suspense flick, it would get just four stars. What I find most appealing in the movie is its theme of redemption, and how that theme ties the two main characters together and to each other. Redemption does come at a cost, as true redemption must, and for Jack Mosley that cost is high, but not too high to not make it worthwhile.

16 Blocks (Widescreen Edition) Specifications

Fully recovering from the wretched flop Timeline, director Richard Donner brings seasoned skill to 16 Blocks, a satisfying thriller boosted by intelligent plotting and the stellar pairing of Bruce Willis and Mos Def in quirky, well-written roles. Making the most of minimal dialogue, Willis plays Jack Mosley, a boozy, disillusioned New York City detective who reluctantly accepts an assignment to transport squeaky-voiced chatterbox Eddie Bunker (Mos Def) to a grand jury hearing where he's scheduled to testify against a group of corrupt, drug-dealing cops. They've got two hours to travel 16 blocks, but the dirtiest cop (David Morse) is determined to kill Eddie before he can testify; what he doesn't know is that Jack senses something in Eddie's seemingly innocent, optimistic demeanor that he wants to protect. Working from a tight, twisting screenplay by Richard Wenk, Donner turns familiar material into an efficient potboiler that delivers tense urban action (like Donner's earlier Mel Gibson hit Conspiracy Theory) while leaving plenty of room for Willis and especially Mos Def (in a critically acclaimed performance) to develop their flawed yet admirable characters. 16 Blocks may be a standard-issue thriller in many respects, but as a showcase for its appealing cast, it quickly rises above its generic limitations. --Jeff Shannon

Fangs

Fangs Review

FANGS is a pretty good little mutant-bats-attack movie. The tiny town of Scottsville is besieged by the fuzzy flappers, much to the chagrin of Mr. Hart (Corbin Bernsen from The Dentist 1 and 2), who sees the onslaught as a severe setback for his real estate empire. Whip Hubley is the local veterinarian, and Tracy Nelson plays the cop. Together, they attempt to deduce what is behind a string of grisly deaths. I like this hokey hunk of cheezy goo! Even w/ no nudity, only slight violence, and nary a cuss-word, FANGS manages to be entertaining. And the CGI bats are fairly life-like! Free Movie Software Downloads

The traditional method of watching movies involved going to the theater or watching movies at the home theater by renting movie videos. Though visiting theatres or watching movies on the DVDs are still popular options, another method, which is giving them a run for their money, is watching movies online. Another plus point is that in most cases the movies are free of charge.

Watching movies online may result in a compromise as far as quality if you don't have the right software installed in your computer. Otherwise you will find that the quality of the picture is very low and the picture continues to flicker, thereby spoiling the movie.

First of all, you need to have the right cable connection. This means you must select the right modem speed. For example, if your modem's speed is 64 kb, the movie will not start playing immediately. This is because movie files are streaming videos involving mpg or mpg4 files. These files need to first build a buffer in the computer and only after that will the movies begin playing seamlessly. On the other hand, if you have a 256 kb connection, your movie will begin to play instantly. This is because the download time with this speed is much faster.

Also, as stated before the movie files are mpg or mpg4 files that need to build up a buffer before actually beginning to play and therefore the amount of space you have in your computer will also make a difference.

The movie should begin to play in five minutes. If it doesn't start or you see a broken Q image in the middle of the screen, it means that you don't have the Quicktime movie player installed on your system.

Apart from a stable cable connection, you also need the QuickTime movie player installed in your system. Most computers already have this software installed. Otherwise you can download it from the net itself.

3 Ways to Detect DVD Movie Wholesale Supplier Scams

If you want to sell DVD movies online, you must detect DVD movie wholesale supplier scams. Selling products over the Internet can give you an excellent business. But in finding legitimate and trustworthy bulk order suppliers, you must be aware of a lot of scammers and cheaters online, just waiting for unsuspicious customers. Many suppliers promise you authentic resources, but in reality, they do not deliver what they promise.

Here are some very important guidelines to detect DVD movie wholesale supplier scams:

1. You should be very vigilant about middlemen.

When buying DVDs from genuine resources, you are making direct business with the wholesaling company. The middleman is the person (can also be a company) who stands between you and the company. Watch out for these middlemen, as many of them pretend that they are wholesalers who may increase prices and may charge you monthly fees. As a result, you pay higher prices for the bulk order movie items. Worse, you will be defeated by a competitor who can get the same item from a legitimate DVD movie wholesale supplier at a significantly lower price. Bear in mind that you will get the real discounted price when you directly deal with the wholesaling company.

2. Be aware that lots of bulk purchase suppliers do not advertise.

It is understandable that a considerable number of wholesaler companies do not advertise to beginners and to small enterprise who sell digital video disc movies online. You must understand that these bulk order suppliers are already dealing with many large accounts. This is one of the major reasons for the existence of the middlemen. These people know that beginners will look for DVD movie wholesale supplier directories online. A number of such companies advertise online. However, attempting to find their websites could take you ages. You must not fall for the cheater lists, believing that you will save time and energy.

3. Looking for authentic wholesale suppliers is not an easy task.

Numerous wholesaler list swindlers will claim that using their system or directory will deliver you profits while selling huge volumes of movies online very easily. Watch out for those sales talks you find on their sites. Scammers will promise you big sales. Do not fall for that. Finding legitimate bulk purchase suppliers yourself will certainly take much of your time. But this is much better since this will save you from being victimized by opportunist middlemen.

If you have already fallen victim to these scammers, do not feel too bad. Now, you are more well-informed regarding your search for a legitimate DVD movie wholesale supplier.

DVD Review: The Ultimate Avengers

You saw the promotional screenshots and you despised them.

You downloaded the trailer and you feared the worst for the movie.

You re-read the TPB and speculated about Millar and Hitch and how they may have become frustrated with the evolution (or should that read as "devolution") of their comic book masterpiece.

Now, the DVD has arrived, and guess what? Your fears have come true... which is a good thing. Read on, true believer, as this review would discuss the dichotomy that is the Ultimate Avengers movie.

Ultimate Expectations

Let's face it. Even if you are a devout DC fan, you have to admit that Mark Millar and Brian Hitch's run on the Ultimates is nothing short of a masterpiece. They have the widescreen in mind in their storytelling and the layouts of their pages. Even the characters were re-imagined to correspond to the Hollywood celebrities they desire for the roles.

People can't help but expect the best from the announced movie.

But when it was announced that the movie would be a cartoon, the a priori disappointments started. The Ultimates wasn't meant to be a cartoon. It was meant to be a summer blockbuster flick!

Then the name. "Ultimate Avengers" is not really logically sound. The storyline is about the formation of the Avengers. They are the first group. The word "ultimate" is comparative. We can't compare this team with any other incarnation. So why Ultimate Avengers? Yes, the decision was made to attract the fans of both the 616 and the Ultimate universes, but hey... they could have called it as "The Ultimates" or "The Avengers" and their target market would have been able to recognize them, either way.

Then the screenshots. By Odin's beard, were they ugly! They looked like amateurish cartoons outsourced from a sweatshop somewhere.

The trailer didn't do much for the movie as well. Inappropriate voice acting, jerky motions and dull animations were just some of the concerns people aired a few days after it was offered for download.

Nonetheless, a lot of people eagerly awaited the DVD's release. Despite the seeming flaws of the movie, countless comic book and cartoon fans waited impatiently for the first complete look at the Ultimate Avengers.

Ultimate Review

This review is about the movie only. DVD extras are not included (sorry folks).

That being said, guess what?

I wasn't disappointed!

The movie clocked in at 71 minutes. It was a fast 71 minutes at that, as action never seemed to stop. The screenshots, the trailers... they never did this movie any justice.

Surely, you've watched better animated films before. But Ultimate Avengers is not bad, by any means. The integration of some computer generated effects was seamless. The art was consistent all throughout.

Marvel Films hyped the opening scene, taken from Ultimates Vol. 1, No. 1, as a powerful opening worthy of comparison to Saving Private Ryan and Lost. Well, that's an exaggeration, but the said opening scene did serve its purpose, and in my opinion, was the best animated moments in the movie.

Voice acting was spot on. Hank Pym sounded like a self-absorbed jackass. Thor sounded like a radical hippie. Tony Stark sounded like the playboy-billionaire that he is, while Iron Man's voice was technologically altered by his armor. Black Widow (yes, she's in the film!) sounded Russian enough. Bruce Banner sounded like a fan boy geek.

The only problems with the voices are Captain America's and Nick Fury's. Cap's was a little too much on the innocent side. You won't hear him shout things like "What are you waiting for? Christmas?" or "What do you think the A on my forehead stands for? France?" in this movie. He sounded rather timid majority of the film. Nick Fury, well, I just expected him to sound, and act, like Samuel L. Jackson. He did not. And neither was he as manipulative and heartless as his comic book version, either in the 616 or the Ultimate Universe.

The story was adapted well. It should've been based on the first 6 issues of Ultimates, Vol. 1, but some story points in the second half of that volume made their way to the movie. Black Widow being one of them, the aliens another.

Other than these two points, everything else is relatively consistent to the story arc from which it was based. There are some creative deviations, of course, but nothing too serious.

Ultimate Differences

Here are the differences between the Ultimates comic book and Ultimate Avenger:

o Tony Stark did not fund the Avengers. In fact, no one knows that he and Iron Man are one and the same, at least, not initially.

o Thor doesn't have a beard. But he did have some unintentionally funny lines.

o There were clues about Hank and Janet's marital problems, but they weren't explored further.

o Cap and Fury went out on a recruiting expedition, instead of having the Avengers, well, assembled when Cap was revived from his cryogenic state.

o The Avengers had a prior mission before the Hulk fiasco. It didn't fare well.

o The Iron Man armor is a combination of the 616 and the Ultimate versions.

o Understandably, the movie is less violent than the comic book. But the film also had its share of kid-unfriendly moments.

Great lines:

o When Cap awoke from his slumber and went on a rampage, only to realize that he is at the outskirts of New York City, he asked Fury, "did we win?" Fury said, "yes, we did."

o When Iron Man and Giant Man met for the first time, Tony remarked, "nice costume."

The movie is a relatively faithful adaptation of the source material. It's no LOTR. More like Pet Cemetery, where the movie was scary but the book was a whole lot scarier.

Ultimate Choice

At its core, this movie is about a man out of time and the guy who worshipped him. Captain America is the real deal. Bruce Banner wanted to become the real deal, and had to pay the price for his choices.

But is Ultimate Avengers worth the purchase?

From a guy who shared your sentiments prior to the movie's release, I would say yes. The technological aspects of the film may be underwhelming, but in the end, you'll feel that it was made with a lot of heart.

I can't even believe that I'm actually excited about the sequel right now.
