Jackass - The Movie (Full Screen Special Edition)

Jackass - The Movie (Full Screen Special Edition) Review

KNowing what to expect coming in, "Jackass" fullfilled all my expectations and also surpassed them. For those who don't know, they film is a string of short stunts by a group of very brave/foolish skaters who are constantly testing the bounds of their own destruction and torquing unsuspecting bystanders in the process. Imagine the old "Candid Camera" show on PCP. Yeah, way cool!
The first scene made me fall in love with the concept when Johnny Knoxville with a straight face tries to return a trashed rental car he's just used for demo derby and ask earnestly for his deposit to be returned.Other highlights are "mobile roller disco", the human mouse trap and some of the stupidest(but funniest)destructive and dangerous concepts you will be glad someone else is doing.
Editing is great, the director transitions from stunt to stunt without trepidation or hesitation. I could have watched another hour of this without tiring.

Jackass - The Movie (Full Screen Special Edition) Overview

Some critics see the success of Jackass: The Movie as the last nail in the coffin of civilization, and they're probably right. This compilation of pain-inflicting stunts and embarrassing pranks has no artistic merit whatsoever--which doesn't keep it from being freakishly entertaining. Among other things, Johnny Knoxville and his posse get beaten up by a female kick-boxing champion; shoot bottle rockets out of their rectums; run amok in Japan wearing giant panda bear costumes; swim with whale sharks while holding pounds of brine shrimp in their swimsuits; and get done up in realistic old-age makeup so that they can race each other in motorized wheelchairs, among other goofs. It's a weird mixture of machismo and masochism, adolescent recklessness and frat boy homoeroticism, and someday someone will write a doctoral thesis about how Jackass relates to our safety-obsessed society. In the meantime, just enjoy. --Bret Fetzer

When Love Is Not Enough

When Love Is Not Enough Review

Moving and inspiring portrayal of Lois Burnham Wilson's struggles through her marriage to Bill, who suffers from alcoholism. Her undying faith in God and Bill are amazing to see on the screen. The strength that both Lois and Bill had to reach recovery for themselves was amazing. Then to go on and bring hope, inspiration, relief and grace to other's who have suffered and are suffering with the addiction to alcohol or is a family member of someone with this addiction is truly inspiring. Faith in God and a gift to the world from God to see how Bill and Lois transformed their personal hell into charity towards the neighbor is beyond inspiring. Thank you Bill Borchert for writing this and Hallmark for producing. Check out these: Guided Footsteps My Name Is Bill W

When Love Is Not Enough Overview

Lois Wilson was a woman of great inner strength and determination. Together, Lois and Bill Wilson started movements that have helped millions of people around the world. And together, they've given us an inspiring love story.

Lois met and fell in love with Bill Wilson. When Bill returned from World War I, they married. Despite concerns over Bill's drinking, Lois believed he was destined for greatness. Soon he was working on Wall Street and they were living a luxurious lifestyle. But Bill's drinking spiraled out of control and soon his job, their home, even their dreams were gone.

Despite repeated disappointments, Lois continued to believe her love and support would eventually persuade Bill to quit drinking. When Bill finally attained sobriety, he poured his time and energy into helping other drunks, which led to the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous. Lois felt resentment that her patience and devotion were not acknowledged. When she discovered the wives of other alcoholics experienced the same anger and frustration, Lois learned her own experience as the wife of a drunk could be invaluable in helping families of other problem drinkers. This was the beginning of Al-Anon.

The DVD also includes the making of "When Love Is Not Enough: The Lois Wilson Story," conversations, credits and production stories, and biographies.

Next movie Review - Nicolas Cage

LINE: An intriguing concept for a film that really developed and eventually implode under a big mess ever end.

The good: The concept of this film revolves around Nicholas Cage, the ability to see up to 2-3 minutes in the future and then be able to customize the behavior of his actions and he was the best result possible. Very cool. At the beginning of the film we see him working the blackjack tables in Las Vegas and, of course, wasMoney because he knows the outcome of hands played, although he tells us that keep a cap on what wins, so as not to arouse suspicion. The safety of the casino do not know how it does. And it's funny. You just wish that we all do! I play the scenes in the head again and again until you find the right solution is quite funny as well. The story pulls Cage as the ability to see into the future is being challenged to save a girl he is involved - will be ablepredict and therefore prevent what is happening to you? The plot of the film is quite well treated, and Julianne Moore is in a fine performance as the cop who comes to believe in the special ability Cage. And 'good ...

The bad: The film is quite funny, until you reach the final. It destroys everything before it happened. We see that time travel of all kinds of movies, there's always the possibility that you go back in time to do it all again. And this isexactly what happened. Most of the film is that Nicholas Cage sees the future, But we do not know that until the end, and when he realizes his actions Which Have a negative consequence will be to the right start and we start all over again! So in other words, you have not seen anything that really happen, so you delete it from memory. This is a deceiver and kill the film in some way unsafe. I probably would have rated higher if not the end of presenting this type of cop-out.

The Master of Ballantrae

The Master of Ballantrae Review

The Master of Ballantrae just might have worked as a sprawling period swashbuckler if...the Master of Ballantrae, the eldest son of the laird of Clan Durie who fights for Bonnie Prince Charlie and loses, hadn't been such a self-centered clod who let his love of gold, wenches and adventure get in the way of honor, wisdom and trust, and if...Errol Flynn had been ten years younger. At 44, he looks 54, and often a puffy and tired 54 at that. If he were younger, he might have convinced us that the selfish and impetuous Jamie Durie would sometime soon in the movie find something honorable to do that would make us root for the romantic and dashing fellow. Looking in his mid-fifties, however, Flynn resembles an aging, petulant rake, and we know it's unlikely that there is any chance of a charming good guy emerging from the husk.

Robert Lewis Stevenson doesn't help. His Master is unredeemably and emotionally selfish, even though a dab hand with a sword, at piracy, with the ladies and with holding a grudge. No man in his right mind would place anyone he loves in the self-centered path of Jamie Durie. Flynn doesn't have much of a chance. It's clear Flynn's rapscallion, romantic, swashbuckling days have long gone by.

The story of the Master of Ballantrae bears some resemblance to Stevenson's novel. A toss of a coin determines that Jamie, the Master, will fight for the Stuart restoration when Charlie Stuart arrives from France to try to wrest the throne away from the Hanoverian King George II. As the elder brother, Jamie will inherit the Durie title and estates. The year is 1745. Jamie's younger brother, Henry (Anthony Steele), will support George. This way, whichever side wins, Clan Durie will have backed the winner. Henry is everything Jamie is not. He's conscientious, honorable and dull. And when Charlie loses, Jamie has to hightail it out of Scotland. Penniless, more or less, he encounters another rogue, Colonel Francis Burke (Roger Livesey, in a rollicking performance, and made up to look more of a drunk than Flynn), and off they go on the adventures of wenching and piracy, fighting and guffawing that make up most of the movie. Jamie never forgets, however, that he has a score to settle with Henry, for by now, thanks to jealousy and treachery, Henry has become the Master of Ballantrae and the heir to Clan Durie. If Jamie can't have the title, then when he sneaks back to Scotland he wants the woman who goes with the title, plus a good deal of money. He's more than willing to kill Henry to get all this.

Much of the movie was photographed in Scotland and looks great. Jack Cardiff gets the credit. The screenplay is often a bawdy, rag tag braggadocio of ripe dialogue credited to Herb Meadow with additional dialogue by Harold Medford. There is a rousing sea attack, some full-bodiced wenches in Tortuga, a fine, mannered dandy of a French pirate captain and a rouser of a Flynn sword fight. Unfortunately, it's obvious to one who looks closely that Flynn's fencing double is getting more screen time that Flynn during the fight. Even so, the story is something of a downer, the tale of a man who could never have enough, who kept close his resentments, who never forgot and who never learned. Well, maybe he learned a little at the end...if he listened to his great, true and only friend, Burke: "Not much time to remember all the girls you've known, all the laughter you've heard, all the gold you've spent, and all the plans you had to spend more. The places we've not seen, Jamie! The things that lie about the world! The fun of it!" Perhaps, but the happy end is about as abrupt and startling as suddenly opening a boiled haggis.

Roger Livesey, a fine British actor, would have overshadowed Flynn, in my opinion, if he hadn't carefully modulated bits and pieces of his performance. Burke is a dangerous rogue, but, unlike Jamie Durie, he's likable. To see Livesey at his very best, watch him in those three classic movies he starred in for Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger: The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, I Know Where I'm Going and A Matter of Life and Death.

If we want to remember Errol Flynn in his sad decline, let it be in that unremembered Western shot cheaply in 1950 and not promoted by the studio, Rocky Mountain. Flynn's prematurely aged face brings authenticity to a Confederate officer who, with his small group of men, decides to act with honor and to accept the consequences. Flynn could act when it suited him.

The DVD color transfer is adequate, but only a first-rate restoration will do justice to all that gorgeous scenery.

The Master of Ballantrae Overview

Shot in Britain, the Scottish Highlands, and a quasi-Caribbean corner of Italy, The Master of Ballantrae has a goofy charm reminiscent of certain Michael Powell movies--a comparison encouraged by Jack Cardiff's magic-hour Technicolor and an exuberant costar turn for Roger Livesey. Something of an autumnal swashbuckler for Errol Flynn, it's also the last film for William Keighley, the starting director on Adventures of Robin Hood 15 years earlier. The Robert Louis Stevenson tale hop-skip-jumps through Bonnie Prince Charlie's bid to reclaim Scotland, the ensuing English crackdown, a bloody falling-out between brothers (Flynn and Anthony Steel), two overlapping romantic triangles, two assumed deaths (same guy), piracy on the high seas, yo-ho-ho in Tortuga, then back to Ballantrae for several showdowns--all in 89 minutes. Call it picaresque or just cockeyed, this amiable entertainment deserves rescuing from oblivion. Likewise the post-pretty-boy Flynn, whose jaded bonhomie plays into the quirky mix. --Richard T. Connors' War

Connors' War Review

I'd normally give this four stars for the B level script and acting, but I have to say very candidly that I completely enjoyed this movie.

It has a reasonable plot, I love the black guys with brains beating the [....] out of white guys with egos, and over-all this movie really works for me.

The Latina bimbo is a confusing mix of boobs, brains, and brass, but of course they end up happily ever after.

This movie ended my day on a nice note, and that's a five star salute.

Blackbeard

Blackbeard Review

This is a lower budget Hallmark movie, but once you have gotten used to that fact this is a fairly engaging movie that runs 3 hours. The actors are all good, and the battle scenes are okay. The ships are pretty cool and they are probably shinier and better looking that a real ship would have been in the 1800's. While the events in the plot are mostly fictional, the historical background is fairly close to the truth as described in recent books like "Empire of Blue Water", an account of Henry Morgan the pirate. In this movie a distinction is made between pirates and privateers, which usually never happens in pirate movies. (A privateer holds a letter of marque, which gives him permission to legally attack ships of an enemy nation. A pirate acts on his own, with or without permission) Some men became pirates or privateers simply because there was no other way they could make a living. They spent their ill-gotten gains at places like Port Royal in Jamaica. In this film there is no Port Royal but there is a New Providence. I enjoyed this film a lot more than the CGI mess that was Pirates of the Carribean III. Pirates and privateers are an important part of our history. For example, English privateers weakened the Spanish Main, setting the stage for Britain to eventually rule North America. Someday there may be a movie made about Sir Henry Morgan, who probably did more than Francis Drake to take North America from Spain. Until then, there is only this modest film to recreate what life may have been like for real pirates.

Blackbeard Overview

IN THE GOLDEN AGE OF PIRACY, AT THE DAWN OF THE 18TH CENTURY, BLACKBEAR STOOD OUT AMONG THE LAWLESS ROGUES AS THE MOST FEARSOME & NOTORIOUS SEAFARER OF THEM ALL. HE KILLED FOR THE REPUTATION & HIS REPUTATION HAS BECOME LEGEND. NOW, COMES THE TRUE STORY OF THE PIRATE EDWARD TEACH, BLACKBEARD.

Blackbeard Specifications

Broken into two parts, the epic Blackbeard tells the tale of this famed pirate's travails through the South Seas, beginning in 1717. Blackbeard begins with Royal Navy Lieutenant Robert Maynard (Mark Umbers) vowing to capture Blackbeard (Angus McFayden), captain of the Queen Anne, in order to make the South Seas safer. Maynard goes undercover to get hired as Queen Anne's navigator, but not before falling in love with Charlotte (Jessica Chastain), the daughter of corrupt governor of West Indies' New Providence, Charles Eden (Richard Chamberlain). As Blackbeard's crew embark on a treasure hunt, Charles Eden is exposed as being a pirate in his own right, as he heads the campaign to purchase stolen booty from various villains. He also plots to kill Charlotte, whose 21st birthday will qualify her for an inheritance that Eden has selfishly hoarded. All the while, Maynard works towards busting Blackbeard, exposing himself to multiple life-threatening situations. Accurately rendered, this dramatized biography of a world-famous pirate feels darker than other pirate films, due to its inclusion of violent pirate clichés such as people walking planks, and rum-drunk pirates torturing each other. Blackbeard's melodramatic romance between Maynard and Charlotte detracts from the film's depiction of hard-edged pirate life, but there is enough piracy here to please. --Trinie Dalton

JFK Movie Review

The assassination of President Kennedy, November 22, 1963, the most enduring, controversial and exciting who-dun-it mysteries of our time. We learned that one man, Lee Harvey Oswald shot the President. Case closed, let us with their lives. But massive, showed apparent inconsistencies between the witnesses and even obvious legal proof to the contrary, a broad conspiracy that has fueled much speculation and debate since that tragic day. Oliver Stone"JFK" clarifies a number of conspiracy theories and does so with such a compelling analysis and intelligence that you want to see more to come - the film is more than three hours, and Stone just scratching the surface of what has happened! No matter what theory they pursue, or even if you do not, Stone is an irrefutable case is based on common sense and available evidence indicates that Oswald was not alone, not the main perpetrators of the attack, but that does not evenfired a gun that day. "JFK" is a great film that will open your eyes to one of the most terrible moments of U.S. history.

The film begins with a prologue on the history of the Kennedy presidency and the forces at work in the background when it came to power. As reported by Martin Sheen, the prologue offers a back story that sets the idea that the Kennedy on a collision course with the establishment, a complex power-hungry military-industrial complex has been his desire to furtherAgenda and profits with the war policy. We then see the consequences of the attacks of people in this extraordinary event on the news cast to learn. The beauty of this episode is that it seems to capture the heart-stopping final moment when you realize what's happening, which is almost unbelievable. The story three years later and the New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison, after a chat with the senator on a fateful flight to Washington, decided to reopen the caseKennedy's assassination, and literally enters Wonderland where "white is black and black is white." The film provides sequence after sequence analysis and evidence is so convincing that one would never see the official version of history should be examined again. If anything, colon, 'Oswald theory made it impossible, for the first time made physically impossible for Oswald to fire work for six seconds, he had to do it, and the second point could never turn left andright to take a pause in the air and do other wonderful things two people for seven times. The latter is the "Magic Bullet Theory, the foundation of the case in the official story and if you start, that apart, everything falls apart, why this film is compelling to see these.

Kevin Costner is shown on earth in this movie, Jim Garrison, we can say that each time that cares passionately material, what he was working in his performance. Some have criticizedhis style, often wooden acting, and this may be appropriate in other films, but he is very good in "JFK." In him we can feel the anger of the public the idea that their government has taken power away from them they feel that day by the exchange with their leaders, who worked with the Foundation. Costner is supported by a great supporting cast of stars, including Tommy Lee Jones, Kevin Bacon, Joe Pesci, Sissy Spacek, Gary Oldman, and myriad others. Fish is very effective in allneurotic as David Ferrie, who gives the great line "f ** king shooters do not even know." But perhaps the most convincing is the character of Donald Sutherland "X", who spends twenty minutes in the film gives a survey of his work in the military Garrison and how the attack was probably carried from the standpoint of his knowledge of information preferred.

The technical aspects of this film is worth remembering also - for the time, this film is quite fast, very fastto provide inter-cutting between different film stocks, a documentary / investigation in history. On this alone the film as a cross cutting his earnings and real images of the scene is remarkable. In particular, the sequence in which Garrison passes through the Zapruder film (the only visual evidence of the crime) Structure frame to show how the real objectives bullets hit totally incompatible with the official version of history. Score by John Williams' worthmention, is at it again in this film cleverly highlight the moods of both tragedy and conspiracy.

maintain an excellent movie, is nailed to the chair and watch until the end.

Bootleg movie downloads are risky

Not sure why Bootleg movie downloads are a risk? See here.

Bootleg movie downloads through the usual open and work freely available file-sharing programs.

To download movies available, you must first download the program is a system that allows access to other computers connected to it. This program and permission to connect any computer to access the system for the PC and the saved data. You basically portThe PC on all the free download service is connected.

Bootleg Movie Downloads harvest processing information-sharing on all computers in the form of different files that are online and send it to your computer, and data to users. That other 's why the system is called "File Sharing.

I think you'll see the risk bootleg movie downloads. Just be sure to have a powerful anti-virus software to all of you before you open or save actually download scanit.

We are saving the file sharing, P2P programs, where you pay a small initial fee to free, unlimited access to millions of movies, music, theater, TV, etc.. There are no files uploaded and controlled by an administrator, while the free and open access bootleg movie download, the user can provide content and files, the file does not protect all those for download.

Needless to say, if a hacker to install a virus or a Trojan horse in thousands ofvery fast computer, the easiest way to do that is free bootleg movie download, free-file-sharing available through open programs.

I personally lost two computers in the past (Kazaa, Napster time) Because of this, and I use now a more secure system, where I paid a small fee once paid now and get full access to over 80 million movies and more than 100 million songs and much more.

Besides the safety aspect of a movie download bootleg is not entirely legal, asCopies are made by hand (literally) with cameras, which are then updated and distributed digitally via download above.

The quality bootleg movies like these are not a high level and if a movie lover, you will definitely try to find a better service or go rent a Blockbuster DVD + Co.

To be honest. I like going to the theater to see the film as it is unbeatable support with a movie on a widescreen Dolby Surround Sound"feel" the action and make your stomach turn.

But everything is more expensive (I still drive a car with petrol), and a weekend in a movie cost me well over $ 20, so that the solution to this Was the download service is received. Now I have a movie download, burn a CD and to prevent the film from his first house, and then when I feel the need of that special atmosphere, I go see the movie in it.

As I said in the filmDVD quality at home, I can see over it again and again to check every detail and special effects I want better control. Unfortunately, this is impossible in a cinema.

So if somehow, like me and love movies, such as quality will be a DVD in your collection at home, then you must visit one of my Squidoo Lens where I show you the # and download the best services at the time with more than 30 million users.

NHL Stanley Cup Champions 2010: Chicago Blackhawks [Blu-ray] Review

I bought the Blu-ray version, thinking I was getting a bit more, when in fact the DVD is like 1 30min or so long, with a few extras, Towes, Kane being drafted a little recap of the parade. It was good, but I would of liked a better recap of the season, not 10min, then focusing on the playoffs for the rest. I found it funny, with the extras, Tallon saying when Kaner was drafted, we like him, he is willing to go into the trees and score, meaning he doesn't care about defensemen, I was thinking where is that Kaner?!? It is worth buying, just wished there was more than 2hrs of overall footage.

The 2010 Oscar candidate for Best Picture

Seventh March 2010, the time for movie fans who will all to see. The Academy Awards will see that Hollywood is working tirelessly for the following month. So he won numerous awards over the years, but none is as known as the Oscars, and this is what I chose to talk to those described in this article.

So who will win the prize for best film this year? This is the prize sought from candidates and will inevitably be passed to one that everyone remembersmost of this year. Winning an award as they see the director a chance, another great work, can not show better. Ten films were nominated this year for the award for best film, you will see a thrilling test, which is at the top.

Up is a great movie and a lot of people for their classic style, but it is unlikely to year, winning the award for best picture. Up is a heart warming film for the millions wholooked. He sees an old man traveling with a child around the world in a house ball. Many would say that applies to candidates for the prize for best film this year.

A film that never reaches the number one box office is a serious man of the Brothers Coen. It 'been by those who had seen the film in the second half of 2009 and loved has been praised as worthy of Oscars.

Quentin Tarantino is back in form with Inglorious Basterds. This is a great film, and ifnot the best film prize, I'm sure it took an actor or best supporting Oscar.

James Cameron's Avatar, of course, is the favorite to win this year. Everyone loved her, as she had a fresh style like no other. But you can never say with certainty, we just wait until the cards are open at night.

Daredevil (Full Screen Edition)

Daredevil (Full Screen Edition) Review

Superhero movies have become one of the highest-grossing genres in the moviemaking business and for good reason. They provide fantastic escapism and bring the fantasies from the pages of comics to life. One such film was the 2003 adaptation of Marvel Comic's character Daredevil.

Now, I'm sure I'll take some heat for this from fans of the comic, but I've never really enjoyed the Daredevil comics all that much; a red-horned wearing Stan Lee/Marvel rebuttal to DC's Batman. This kept me from being interested in the comics, but I always enjoy a good superhero movie so I gave the film adaptation of Daredevil a shot. Like many, I found the product disappointing...but then I discovered there was a Director's cut many claimed to be drastically different from the theatrical release I had witnessed...

That is correct. The Director's Cut is indeed a whole other film that stands on its own as an engaging superhero flick. I'll just have to summarize both versions without giving away too much- just so you can understand the differences.

Theatrical Cut: 2.5/5 Stars

This is the version of the film most people have probably seen and found to be severely disapointing. It clearly tries to follow up Spider-Man with wall-to-wall special effect fights with gravity defying, Matrix-influenced fights. The only real highlight is Colin Farrell as assassin Bullseye, whose over-the-top antics and remorseless killing make for quite a show. Matt Murdock's (Daredevil) daytime career as a lawyer who stands for the little-man is totally glossed over in order to increase the action percentage and the Kingpin (played outstandingly by Michael Clarke Duncan) is so underdeveloped and unintimidating that he seems more like a glorified CEO than a prominent crime lord.

In its theatrical format Daredevil is a fairly typical superhero movie. Wall to wall fantasy action with minor character development, but little soul; only good thing to be found here is the soundtrack which features some contemporary songs and a stylish directing style.

Director's cut: 4/5 Stars

Most of the flaws of the theatrical cut are resolved in this grittier version of the film. This isn't one of those director's cuts like Alien Vs. Predator where they splatter some CGI blood but the final result still blows chunks. No, this Director's Cut truly is an alternate cut that bears only a vague resemblance to the theatrical cut.

Allow me to list some reasons why this cut is vastly superior to the edition many of you saw in theaters back in '03.

1. Character development: Matt Murdock is developed as a character and a lawyer instead of being simply the man in the red costume. He is a conflicted individual who doesn't quite know yet what he wants to be; only that he wants to take down crime in whatever manner possible. The Kingpin is shown as a brutal crime boss who rules without remorse. Electra is cut-back in this version, but this version of the film she really is only a supporting cast member (which I prefer because her character was the weakest part of the theatrical cut, in my personal opinion). Only character without improvement is the over-the-top Bullseye, but this is for the best seeing as Farrell's character really does work best as a whimsical enigma (Farrell does however get to drop the film's single F-bomb).

2. New Scenes: An entire subplot cut from the theatrical cut involves Matt Murdock represented a drug dealer (Coolio) who has been framed by the Kingpin for the murder of a prostitute. This entire subplot works in developing a reason for Daredevil to want the Kingpin while in the theatrical cut it turns the hunt for Kingpin a simple revenge story of Daredevil getting angry over his murdered romantic lead. Because of this the film takes on a new emotional depth.

3. Alternate Scenes: Scenes such as the love scene between Affleck and him in confession have been removed from this cut of Daredevil . Those tacked on, crowd-pleasing moments that seemed to drag down the pacing of the film have been removed from the director's vision of the film creating better flow along with giving the hero a more tragic story.

4. Fight Scenes: Now, if you hated the Matrix/Spider-Man fight scenes from the theatrical cut I'm sorry to say those are still here. I liked most of these fights (except the unnecessary one between Matt and Electra in the park which is just worthless filler) but the one that improves the most in this version is the climatic fight between Daredevil and Kingpin. In the theatrical cut Kingpin is a pushover (in the theatrical cut you might as well turn the film off after Bullseye is taken out). In the Director's Cut Michael Clarke Duncan takes the opportunity to remind us he was a professional bodyguard prior to breaking into the acting scene. This is a brutal fight between a David and Goliath that doesn't let you down considering the way the film has built it up.

5. Tone: This film is no Spider-Man. Action scenes might be similar, but the tone of this Director's Cut makes a fine attempt at following the footsteps as such greats as The Crow.

6. Humor: Even though this cut is far darker than the theatrical cut it also manages to insert a fair dose of brisk humor. This allows leveling out the tension and making for a more exciting experience. Action scenes are fun, but without interludes they just become boring, which was a primary problem with the theatrical cut.
Now, the Director's Cut is not without faults (hence why I only give it Four Stars). It still suffers in the believability of its action scenes and the weak performances from Jennifer Garner, but overall it wins my approval. Does that mean you'll like it? Well, to put it in perspective I didn't necessarily "hate" the theatrical cut. I just found it generic and dull. Now, if you absolutely HATED the theatrical cut for its unbelievable action scenes, and the presence of Ben Affleck simply for being...Ben Affleck, odds are you will still detest this film.

If you thought the theatrical cut was only a missed opportunity? I suggest you pick up a copy of the director's cut and prepare to see this film in a whole new light! It isn't perfect, but it is a magnificent improvement!

Daredevil (Full Screen Edition) Overview

For Daredevil, justice is blind, and for the guilty?there's hell to pay! Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner ignite dangerous sparks and nonstop thrills in this "dazzling action-adventure" (The Film Journal) about the newest breed of superhero. By day, blind attorney Matt Murdock (Affleck) toils for justice in Hell's Kitchen. By night, he's Daredevil, The Man Without Fear - a powerful, masked vigilante stalking the dark streets with an uncanny "radar sense" that allows him to "see" with superhuman capabilities. But when the love of his life, fiery Elektra Natchios (Garner), is targeted by New York City's ruthless Kingpin of crime (Michael Clarke Duncan) and his deadly assassin Bullseye (Colin Farrell), Daredevil may be about to meet his match.

Daredevil (Full Screen Edition) Specifications

Darker than its popular comic-book predecessor Spider-Man, the million extravaganza Daredevil was packaged for maximum global appeal, its juvenile plot beginning when 12-year-old Matt Murdock is accidentally blinded shortly before his father is murdered. Later an adult attorney in New York's Hell's Kitchen, Murdock (Ben Affleck) uses his remaining, superenhanced senses to battle crime as Daredevil, the masked and vengeful "man without fear," pitted against dominant criminal Kingpin (Michael Clarke Duncan) and the psychotic Bullseye (Colin Farrell), who can turn almost anything into a deadly projectile. Daredevil is well matched with the dynamic Elektra (Jennifer Garner), but their teaming is as shallow as the movie itself, which is peppered with Marvel trivia and cameo appearances (creator Stan Lee, Clerks director and Daredevil devotee Kevin Smith) and enough computer-assisted stuntwork to give Spidey a run for his money. This is Hollywood product at its most lavishly vacuous; die-hard fans will argue its merits while its red-leathered hero swoops and zooms toward a sequel. --Jeff Shannon

Macho Dancer

Macho Dancer Review

Like the later and much glossier MIDNIGHT DANCERS, MACHO DANCER depicts the lives of male prostitutes in Manilla; unlike MIDNIGHT DANCERS, however, it is considerably more gritty and disquieting. The story concerns Pol (Alan Paule), a young man in the Manillian provinces who has drifted into prostitution with an American G.I. in order to help support his impoverished family. When his patron finishes his tour of duty, Pol's friend Greg (Bobby Sano) urges him to try his luck in Manilla.

Once in Manilla, Pol becomes a "Macho Dancer," working as a preformer and prostitute at a police protected club in the tourist belt--and becomes friends with fellow club worker Noel (Daniel Fernando) and upscale call-girl Bambi (Jacklyn Jose.) Although we realize they are motivated by poverty and lack of other skills (time and again the characters simply state "I was hungry"), the film paints itself in extremely tantalizing, erotic colors--and much more explicitly so than MIDNIGHT DANCERS--but as the story progresses the eroticism of the film seques into an extremely dark story of the foundations of the sex-trade: youth, poverty, hunger, and a corrupt police and economic system that preys on all three. By the film's conclusion one feels extremely guilty for having, perhaps, salivated a bit over the boys and girls--for it is precisely that reaction that creates the marketplace which so brutally preys upon them.

The youthful cast members are extraordinarly beautiful, casual with their nudity and behavior before the cameras, and surprisingly talented in their ability to convey both the beauty that makes them so sensual and the dark, dangerous world through which they scramble. The entire cast is remarkable, and Jacklyn Jose is a standout--an extraordinary beauty and remarkably gifted actress. Although MACHO DANCER hooks its audience with titilating eroticism, it has a sharp jab that prevents that same audience from romanticizing prostitution in any way. All the more disquieting for it display of beautiful youth, after seeing MACHO DANCER it becomes impossible for one to think of prostitution as a "victimless crime." Recommended.

Men of Honor

Men of Honor Review

Chronicles the inspirational, true-life exploits of Carl Brashear, who became the Navy's first African-American Master Diver. Brashear runs into formidable opposition in the form of Billy Sunday, a rebellious senior officer and celebrated Master Chief Navy Diver. But it is Sunday who ultimately helps Brashear, the son of a Kentucky sharecropper, overcome a crippling injury, fight racism and bureaucracy, and make military history. Cuba Gooding Jr. delivers a credible, engaging performance. Robert De Niro and Cuba Gooding Jr. are eminently watchable. An excellent movie about courage and determination.

Men of Honor Overview

One of those rare films that grabs you by the gut and never lets go, Men of Honor was inspired by the life of Carl Brasher (Cuba Gooding Jr.), an African American who dared to dream of becoming a U.S. Navy Master Diver. Despite a bigoted training officer (Robert DeNiro) and a tragic shipboard accident, Carl never gives up and achieves the impossible in an incredible finish that will leave you cheering.

Men of Honor Specifications

Men of Honor presents a great role model for younger viewers, yet it's rated R due to abundant use of the F word. With appropriate discretion, parents should allow their preteen and teenaged children to see this rousing if altogether conventional biopic inspired by the life of Carl Brashear. Played with gravity and gumption by Cuba Gooding Jr., Brashear was the first African American to become a master diver in the U.S. Navy, despite the lingering effects of segregation, opposition from Navy brass, and the amputation of his left leg following a tragic on-duty accident. Robert De Niro adds marquee value and salty bluster as Billy Sunday, the drunken, redneck (and fictionalized) Master Chief who watches, with gradual admiration, as Brashear attains his ultimate goal through sheer force of will.

This is all quite uplifting on its surface, but in attempting to hit the requisite highlights of an inspiring biography, director George Tillman Jr. (Soul Food) reduces Brashear's achievement to a succession of clichés, forcing Gooding and De Niro to battle sentiment with their noteworthy performances. As Sunday's neglected wife, Charlize Theron is completely extraneous; Hal Holbrook's diving-school commander is a ranting caricature; and newcomer Aunjanue Ellis barely registers as Brashear's wife (in part because their obligatory romance is handled with an utter lack of finesse). There's no question that Brashear's efforts are heroic and worthy of recognition, so Men of Honor serves its basic purpose. Still, one can't help but wonder if Brashear's story would be even more impressive with a more authentic treatment. --Jeff Shannon

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels Review

If you have seen Snatch and liked it, you'll like this too. British gangster film. Gory but not too bad and had some laughs in it too. Really good movie.

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels Overview

Cockney boys Tom, Soap, Eddie, and Bacon are in a bind; they owe seedy criminal and porn king "Hatchet" Harry a sizable amount of cash after Eddie loses half a million in a rigged game of poker. Hot on their tails is a thug named Big Chris who intends to send them all to the hospital if they don't come up with the cash in the allotted time. Add into the mix an incompetent set of ganja cultivators, two dimwitted robbers, a "madman" with an afro, and a ruthless band of drug dealers and you have an astonishing movie called Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Before the boys can blink, they are caught up in a labyrinth of double-crosses that lead to a multitude of dead bodies, copious amounts of drugs, and two antique rifles.

Written and directed by talented newcomer Guy Ritchie, this is one of those movies that was destined to become an instant cult classic à la Reservoir Dogs. Although some comparisons were drawn between Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino, it would be unfair to discount the brilliant wit of the story and the innovative camerawork that the director brings to his debut feature. Not since The Krays has there been such an accurate depiction of the East End and its more colorful characters. Indicative of the social stratosphere in London, Ritchie's movie is a hilarious and at times touching account of friendships and loyalty. The director and his mates (who make up most of the cast) clearly are enjoying themselves here. This comes across in some shining performances, in particular from ex-footballer Vinnie Jones (Big Chris) and an over-the-top Vas Blackwood (as Rory Breaker), who very nearly steals the show. Full of quirky vernacular and clever tension-packed action sequences, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is a triumph--a perfect blend of intelligence, humor, and suspense. --Jeremy Storey

Planet of the Apes

Planet of the Apes Review

I guess that you'd have to be skeptical of movie that has as many 1 and 2 star reviews as it does 4 and 5 star reviews. But in my opinion, Tim Burton's 2001 remake of the classic 1968 version of Planet of the Apes was a victim of a lot of unjust criticism.

Most of the criticism is from preservationists that just don't like their classics tampered with. To them I say fair enough, but I'm also here to say that as much as I loved the original movie that spawned 4 sequels, a television series and an animated TV series, I liked Tim Burton's version the best. Burton's film explained how it could all be possible better than the original while at the same time adhered to the spirit of Pierre Boulle's original novel. Sure Burton took some liberties of his own too, but he also paid honorable tribute to the '68 sci-fi classic in several scenes.

I think that a lot of criticism was also created by the whole time warp thing too. Jumping back and forth in time can be a difficult thing to pull off; it can be very confusing. And it is indeed confusing in Burton's remake. But ultimately it all adds up and is very cool when you finally "get it".

Marky Mark Wahlberg also received some pans for his performance, but I thought he was great. And the apes, most notably Helena Bonham Carter, Tim Roth, Michael Clarke Duncan & Paul Giamatti, all looked great; they were scary, amusing and the acting was excellent. The movie is action packed and thoroughly entertaining through and through. Like I said earlier, I was certainly a fan of the original, but Burton's movie to me was less of a remake of the 1968 film and more of a better adaptation of Boulle's 1963 novel.

I bought this movie once on DVD already all the way back in 2001; but I wouldn't hesitate to give this a try on Blu Ray and I recommend that you do too...especially if you've never seen the movie.

Planet of the Apes Overview

After a spectacular crash-landing on an uncharted planet, brash astronaut Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg) finds himself trapped in a savage world where talking apes dominate the human race. Desperate to find a way home, Leo must evade the invincible gorilla army led by ruthless General Thade (Tim Roth) and his most trusted warrior, Attar (Michael Clarke Duncan). Now the pulse-pounding race is on to reach a sacred temple that may hold the shocking secrets of mankind's past - and the last hope for it's salvation!

Planet of the Apes Specifications

Billed as a "reimagining" of the original 1968 film, Tim Burton's extraordinary Planet of the Apes constantly borders on greatness, adhering to the spirit of Pierre Boulle's original novel while exploring fresh and inventive ideas and paying honorable tribute to the '68 sci-fi classic. Burton's gifts for eccentric inspiration and visual ingenuity make this a movie that's as entertaining as it is provocative, beginning with Rick Baker's best-ever ape makeup (hand that man an Oscar®!), and continuing through the surprisingly nuanced performances and breathtaking production design. Add to all this an intelligent screenplay that turns Boulle's speculative reversal--the dominance of apes over humans--into a provocative study of civil rights and civil war. The film finally goes too far with a woefully misguided ending that pays weak homage to the original, but everything preceding that misfire is astonishingly right.

While attempting the space-pod retrieval of a chimpanzee test pilot, Major Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg) enters a magnetic storm that propels him into the distant future, where he crash-lands on the ape-ruled planet. Among the primitively civilized apes, treatment of enslaved humans is a divisive issue: senator's daughter Ari (Helena Bonham Carter) advocates equality while the ruthless General Thade (Tim Roth) promotes extermination. While Davidson ignites a human rebellion, this conflict is explored with admirable depth and emotion, and sharp dialogue allows Burton's exceptional cast to bring remarkable expressiveness to their embattled ape characters, most notably in the comic relief of orangutan slave trader Limbo (played to perfection by Paul Giamatti). Classic lines from the original film are cleverly reversed (including an unbilled cameo for Charlton Heston, in ape regalia as Thade's dying father), and while this tale of interspecies warfare leads to an ironic conclusion that's not altogether satisfying, it still bears the ripe fruit of a timeless what-if idea. --Jeff Shannon

The Man with Two Brains

The Man with Two Brains Review

Here is another Carl Reiner-directed "farce" that also stars Steve Martin (the two collaborated before in the '80s in "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid"). This is the best of that duo with a lot of laugh-out loud scenes. There are tons of gags, both obvious and subtle. In fact, I think is one of Martin's funniest performances.

I had remembered this as a strictly light comedy but was surprised when I viewed it again this year and heard all the sex jokes. Reiner turned out to be a dirty old man but he write and direct some very funny movies. It's unusual for a comedy to be rated "R," but that was the appropriate rating. If you know and don't care if its a bit raunchy, this is a very funny movie.

The Man with Two Brains Overview

Widowed, world-famous neurosurgeon Michael Hfuhruhurr (Steve Martin) is trapped in a loveless marriage with Dolores Benedict (Kathleen Turner), who is only interested in Hfuhruhurr's money. On a trip to Vienna to attend a medical conference, Hfuhruhurr falls in love with a bottled brain (voiced by Sissy Spacek), and finds himself in the middle of murders committed by the elevator killer. Year: 1983 Director: Carl Reiner Starring: Steve Martin, Kathleen Turner, David Warner, Paul Benedict, Richard Brestoff, James Cromwell

The Man with Two Brains Specifications

Meet Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr (Steve Martin), the famous brain surgeon. Perhaps the name is not unfamiliar, though it is unpronounceable; the good doctor is the inventor of the celebrated "screw-top" method of brain surgery, in which the top of the skull twists off as easily as the lid of a pickle jar. The man may be a medical genius, but his talent for love leaves something to be desired, which explains his marriage to a gold-digging vixen (Kathleen Turner). Ah, but Dr. Hfuhruhurr may yet find true love, in the form of the disembodied brain he discovers in the lab of a mad scientist--David Warner, gone the Frankenstein route. (Lovely image: Hfuhruhurr in a rowboat, taking the brain out for a romantic ride on the lake.) Thus, in its own utterly goofy way, does The Man with Two Brains delve into the eternal dilemma of male indecision: does a man fall in love with a woman's body, or with her mind? Along the way, of course, there are gags both highbrow and very, very lowbrow, a mind-body split that might be why critics have tended to prefer the more sophisticated slapstick of All of Me (directed, like this film, by Carl Reiner) and Roxanne among the early Steve Martin outings. Still, this is one of Martin's funniest pictures, and a game Kathleen Turner, fresh off her Body Heat success, ably spoofs her own sultry image.
