True Grit [Blu-ray]

True Grit [Blu-ray] Review

True Grit [Blu-ray] Overview

In 1970, John Wayne won an Academy Award. for his larger-than-life performance as the drunken, uncouth and totally fearless one-eyed U.S. Marshall, Rooster Cogburn. The cantankerous Rooster is hired by a headstrong young girl (Kim Darby) to find the man who murdered her father and fled with the family savings. When Cogburn's employer insists on accompanying the old gunfighter, sparks fly. And the situation goes from troubled to disastrous when an inexperienced but enthusiastic Texas Ranger (Glen Campbell) joins the party. Laughter and tears punctuate the wild action in this extraordinary Western which features performances by Robert Duvall and Strother Martin.

True Grit [Blu-ray] Specifications

A wonderful/rueful running gag in El Dorado involves the Edgar Allan Poe line "Ride, boldly ride" being mangled by toupee-wearer Wayne into "Ride, baldy, ride." Two years later, in True Grit, Wayne put the joke in italics by donning an eyepatch and several inches of girth to play cantankerous territorial marshal Rooster Cogburn. Critics belatedly noticed that he could be a marvelously entertaining actor, and Hollywood finally gave him the Oscar they'd failed to nominate him for in Red River, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, The Quiet Man, The Searchers, et al. But make no mistake: True Grit is a splendid movie, with lovingly textured storytelling and sturdy characters, Henry Hathaway's finest high-country action set-pieces, intoxicatingly ornate frontier language, and a couple of formidable bad guys (Jeff Corey's Tom Cheney and Robert Duvall's "Lucky" Ned Pepper). It's a compliment to say that, from a technical standpoint, the movie could have been made any time in Hathaway's 40-year career, yet its feeling for the reality of violence ceded no ground to The Wild Bunch, released around the same time. Still, the film's most sublime passage falls between bursts of gunplay: Rooster sitting on a hilltop at night recounting his life story, as John Wayne metamorphoses ineluctably into W.C. Fields. --Richard T. Jameson

Prom Night in Mississippi

Prom Night in Mississippi Review

Prom Night in Mississippi Feature

  • PROM NIGHT IN MISSISSIPPI (DVD MOVIE)

Prom Night in Mississippi Overview

In 1970, the town of Charleston, Mississippi, allowed black students into their white high school, but refused to integrate the senior prom. Twenty-seven years later, Charleston resident and Academy Award--winning actor Morgan Freeman offered to finance the prom--under the condition it be integrated. His offer was ignored. In 2008, Freeman made the offer again. This time the school board accepted, and history was made.

Prom Night In Mississippi traces the tumultuous events leading up to Charleston's first integrated prom through intimate conversations with students, families, faculty members and Freeman himself. As the film unfolds, we delve deeply into the heated race issues that tear apart this tiny community, and realize that this troubling segregation has less to do with the students than their parents. Ultimately, Prom Night In Mississippi captures a big moment in a small town, where hope finally blossoms in black, white and a whole lot of taffeta.

Prom Night in Mississippi Specifications

Back in 1954, the landmark Supreme Court decision known as Brown v. Board of Education struck down state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students. But towns like Charleston, Mississippi, the subject of Paul Saltzman's 2008 documentary Prom Night in Mississippi, were a bit slow on the uptake. It wasn't until 1970 that the high school was integrated; even then, nearly 40 more years passed before the senior prom was allowed to follow suit. In 1997 actor Morgan Freeman, a Charleston native, offered to pay for the prom if both black and white students were included, but his offer was rebuffed. Freeman, noting that "tradition is one thing, [but] idiocy is another," tried again in 2008, and this time it worked; the senior class voted unanimously for integration, and administrators and teachers were receptive as well. But as the school began its preparations for this historic event, it was soon apparent that it would not be easy. There was considerable resistance from some of the parents and other adults steeped in the area's legacy of racism; in fact, while the mixed prom would go on as planned, it was preceded by another, all-white event (it's telling that the organizers of the white prom refused to appear on camera for the documentary). But some of the other parents we see are deeply, honestly conflicted, including blue-collar "redneck" (his description) Glen Sumner, whose daughter is one of the very few students involved in an interracial relationship. The kids are for the most part great. In interview after interview, these wise, well-spoken young people express their respect for their parents while questioning their attitudes, ingenuously wondering why the world is so harsh. In the end, following weeks of choosing the right clothes, having their hair done, and so on, they come together to make the mixed prom a rousing success, creating an uplifting end to this well-made, compelling film. --Sam Graham

Morning Glory

Morning Glory Review

Morning Glory Overview

For Becky (Rachel McAdams, "The Notebook"), running a TV show in New York City was the big break she dreamed of…until star co-anchors Mike (Harrison Ford, Indiana Jones) and Colleen (Diane Keaton, "Something’s Gotta Give") declare an all-out, on-air war. Making the show work with its cast of eccentric characters and outrageous story angles will take a major miracle, but Becky is ready to rise and outshine. From the writer of "The Devil Wears Prada" and "27 Dresses", "Morning Glory" is a “Tart, terrific comedy*” that critics rave is, “Smart! Fresh! Brilliant! Heartwarming! Morning Glory has it all!*” *Peter Travers , Rolling Stone **Neil Rosen, NY1

Morning Glory Specifications

Morning Glory showcases the comedic (and romantic) talents of two cute couples of different ages--Harrison Ford and Diane Keaton (never sparklier) and the adorable Rachel McAdams and Patrick Wilson. Love can bloom, no matter what time of life, or, as the setting of Morning Glory underscores, no matter what time of day. McAdams is excellent and darling as an ambitious TV producer who vows to turn around a sinking morning TV news show by bringing in a heavyweight anchor (Ford) to pair with the lighthearted, deft Keaton. But Ford wants none of the "news lite" that morning shows need to surface, so sparks fly between the bickering co-anchors almost immediately. Happily, Ford is easier in his skin in Morning Glory than he has been in some of his past romantic efforts (Six Days Seven Nights), so he and Keaton play off each other easily and believably. In a parallel story, McAdams's Becky is pursued by Wilson's Adam, which takes Ms. Focused Career Girl (if not the viewer) by surprise. The direction by Roger Michell (Notting Hill) is crisp, although the script by Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada) isn't particularly funny. (Adam thinks Ford's character, Pomeroy, is the "third worst person in the world," after Kim Jong Il and… Angela Lansbury.) But the world of TV news portrayed in Morning Glory is as immersive as it is in Broadcast News, and the romantic subplots truly are romantic. There's love in the air--and on the air--in Morning Glory. --A.T. Hurley

Date Night (Extended Edition) (With Digital Copy) [Blu-ray]

Date Night (Extended Edition) (With Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] Review

Date Night (Extended Edition) (With Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] Overview

Steve Carell and Tina Fey are “a match made in comedy heaven” (Ben Lyons, E!) in this uproarious adventure about an ordinary couple in the right place...on the wrong night. Phil and Claire Foster are a sensible, suburban husband and wife slogging through their daily lives and marriage. But a case of mistaken identity sets off a n outrageous chain of events involving small-time thieves, big-city mobsters, corrupt cops and a crazed cabbie, as the Fosters’ “date night” turns into a wild ride they’ll never forget!

Date Night (Extended Edition) (With Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] Specifications

Tina Fey and Steve Carell are two of the most charming performers in entertainment today. Their goofy attractiveness makes them a perfect couple in Date Night: an unremarkable husband and wife from New Jersey, they get mistaken for crooks in Manhattan, sending them on a wild night replete with snooty wait staff, crooked cops, glitter-specked strippers, a shirtless superspy (Mark Wahlberg, as buff as ever), and a preposterous car chase. The movie makes no effort to be remotely plausible and the last third really goes off the rails, and it would probably be better served by less familiar faces in minor roles (bit parts are played by Mark Ruffalo, Kristen Wiig, Common, James Franco, Mila Kunis, William Fichtner, and Ray Liotta). It's disappointing that the dialogue doesn't crackle the way it does on 30 Rock or The Office. But Fey and Carell carry the movie along through sheer nerdy pluck. Rarely does a couple in a movie seem genuinely devoted to each other, not out of wild passion, but for all the things that a real marriage is built on: patience, shared humor, a willingness to deal with day-to-day annoyances, and simple affection. Fey and Carell seem like a couple you'd actually enjoy going out to dinner with. In today's world, that's more romantic than sunsets and bouquets of roses. --Bret Fetzer

Celine Dion: Live in Las Vegas - A New Day [Blu-ray] Specifications

If you were one of the handful of folks who missed Céline Dion's mega-run in Las Vegas, fear not: Céline Dion: A New Day is a riveting, sumptuous front-row seat to the whole extravagant experience. As concert DVDs go, this is a show of a lifetime, nearly six hours featuring not only no-expenses-spared production values and every song from Dion's famed show, but priceless extras as well. Dion's substantial voice is in fine form, and sparkles on signature tunes like "A New Day Has Come," "The Power of Love," and of course the theme from Titanic, "My Heart Will Go On" (and Dion-watchers will note that she's thankfully dialed back the breast-beating that used to accompany this song).

But as impressive as the performances are--and they include the talented gymnasts, dancers, and backup singers who work as a Cirque du Soleil-style ensemble--the set's most memorable moments are found in the personal footage and extras. Dion comes across as truly humble and approachable, with a wicked sense of humor and real compassion for her hard-working staff and her fans. There are sweet, intimate moments of Dion with her husband and son, as well as telling scenes that show her true resourcefulness (girlfriend does her own makeup!). The many docs include one on the building of her special theater and the building of the show from the ground up. "If you're going to gamble," says Dion's manager and husband, René Angélil, "Vegas is the place to do it." Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner. --A.T. Hurley

Tron: Legacy (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Overview

Disney presents a high-tech motion picture unlike anything you've ever seen in an astonishing 3D Combo Pack. Immerse yourself in the digital world of Tron, as celebrated actor Jeff Bridges stars in a revolutionary visual effects adventure beyond imagination. When Flynn, the world's greatest video game creator, sends out a secret signal from an amazing digital realm, his son discovers the clue and embarks on a personal journey to save his long-lost father. With the help of the fearless female warrior Quorra, father and son venture through an incredible cyber universe and wage the ultimate battle of good versus evil. Bring home an unrivaled entertainment experience with Tron: Legacy in jaw-dropping Disney Blu-ray 3D - complete with never-before-seen bonus features that take you even deeper into the phenomenal world of Tron. It's magic in a new dimension.

Tron: Legacy (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Specifications

The luminescent lines and shimmering surfaces of Tron: Legacy will tantalize anyone who's lusted after the latest smartphone. The long-ago disappearance of his computer-genius father has left Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund, Four Brothers) with existential ennui and a lot of money. When he discovers his father's secret workshop, he gets sucked into a computerized realm ruled by a megalomaniac computer program named Clu--who just happens to be his father's virtual doppelganger. To find his real father (Jeff Bridges, reprising his role from the original Tron, with a bit of his role from The Big Lebowski thrown in for kicks), Sam has to fight in gladiatorial games, drive in digital demolition derbies, and be stripped and dressed by slinky pneumatic babes. For all the techno-babble and quasi-philosophy the characters spout, this is a movie without an idea in its shiny head. It would be pointless to describe the many sillinesses because Tron: Legacy isn't actually trying to be smart; it's trying to look cool. It succeeds. Olivia Wilde (House) looks like the coolest action figure ever (if the entire movie could be nothing but the shot of her lounging on a futuristic sofa, it would be a masterpiece of avant-garde gizmo-fetishism). The facemasks are cool, the glowing skintight outfits are cool, the light-cycles are really, really cool--and let's be honest, it's all about the light-cycles. That's what the audience for Tron wants, and that's what Tron: Legacy delivers. --Bret Fetzer

Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy (+ Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] Review

Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy (+ Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] Overview

Experience one of the most popular movie series of all time like never before with the Back to the Future 25th Anniversary Trilogy! Join Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox), Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) and a time traveling DeLorean for the adventure of a lifetime as they travel to the past, present and future, setting off a time-shattering chain reaction that disrupts the space time continuum! From filmmakers Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, these timeless films feature all-new 25th Anniversary restorations for enhanced picture and sound plus hours of exciting bonus features.

Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy (+ Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] Specifications

Filmmaker Robert Zemeckis topped his breakaway hit Romancing the Stone with Back to the Future, a joyous comedy with a dazzling hook: what would it be like to meet your parents in their youth? Billed as a special-effects comedy, the imaginative film (the top box-office smash of 1985) has staying power because of the heart behind Zemeckis and Bob Gale's script. High schooler Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox, during the height of his TV success) is catapulted back to the '50s where he sees his parents in their teens, and accidentally changes the history of how Mom and Dad met. Filled with the humorous ideology of the '50s, filtered through the knowledge of the '80s (actor Ronald Reagan is president, ha!), the film comes off as a Twilight Zone episode written by Preston Sturges. Filled with memorable effects and two wonderfully off-key, perfectly cast performances: Christopher Lloyd as the crazy scientist who builds the time machine (a DeLorean luxury car) and Crispin Glover as Marty's geeky dad. --Doug Thomas

Critics and audiences didn't seem too happy with Back to the Future, Part II, the inventive, perhaps too clever sequel. Director Zemeckis and cast bent over backwards to add layers of time-travel complication, and while it surely exercises the brain it isn't necessarily funny in the same way that its predecessor was. It's well worth a visit, though, just to appreciate the imagination that went into it, particularly in a finale that has Marty watching his own actions from the first film. --Tom Keogh

Shot back-to-back with the second chapter in the trilogy, Back to the Future, Part III is less hectic than that film and has the same sweet spirit of the first, albeit in a whole new setting. This time, Marty ends up in the Old West of 1885, trying to prevent the death of mad scientist Christopher Lloyd at the hands of gunman Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson, who had a recurring role as the bully Biff). Director Zemeckis successfully blends exciting special effects with the traditions of a Western and comes up with something original and fun. --Tom Keogh

Film Review: Hot Tub Time Machine (2010)

CONCLUSION: Technically, "Hot Tub Time Machine" is not a good movie, saw the holes in the story and stupidity, but is somewhat more than the sum of its parts, showing a lot of fun.

The Good: you might expect, the stupid comedy with this film its title, in which one, but director Steve Pink retains just enough of the gross-out antics and silly top-over observed to provide a movie that a lot of fun. After threemiddle-aged male friends and a nephew accidentally go back to the '80s, thanks to a supercharged hot tub, have not had an adventure for his business, which leads to hilarious results. First, it seeks to ensure that the time continuum is disturbed, but before long, things do not go according to plan. The sympathy of the cast makes this a winner, with John Cusack, who from the front. Their antics throughout the film, as well as their "knowledge" of time travel through 80 Sci-FiThe movie is hysterical. Another big plus for this film works is the 80 stars who appear here and there with Chevy Chase qualify as cryptic Whirlpool Mechanics and Crispin Glover as the servant with one arm as the great stand out. Glover is the source of a particularly hilarious running gag, where you can see many opportunities for him, where his arm is cut off, but it happens to end in an unlikely place. "Hot Tub Time Machine" is a surprising amountFun.

The bad: The highlight and finale of the film actually did not hit the right note. Although a great imagination, that the loser of the group Lou (Rob Corddry), remains behind in the 80s and uses his knowledge for the future, become a billionaire and change their lives for the better is fun, but somehow saw jokes as "Lougle" (instead of Google) and "Motley Lou" apparently not so funny.

The best kung fu movies - Thousands to choose!

The Kung Fu film genre is one of the biggest movie genres of all time. China, especially Hong Kong and led the way in which it remained the leader for the best kung fu movies. What makes a classic martial arts movies? Let's take a look.

The thing with martial arts movies is that they are timeless. The old man gets better with time and gain classic status, while some of the latest movies come from instant classic.

The olderStyle of film has a few special effects such as hidden wires and CGI, and depended solely on the martial arts actors. CGI was the first great Chinese film makers, many of them very quickly visitors in their all their films at every opportunity, much to the chagrin of many films.

Some of the latest kung fu movie forgot to CGI and wires hidden only sparingly for dramatic effect. One example is the 2008 film"Ip Man" rigid Donny Yen. The film was a showcase of Chinese martial arts and showed some classical narrative. Not surprisingly, he has received numerous awards at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

Everyone has different martial arts movie, but for me the best kung fu movies are the ones who are old in the life of China and show how fascinating country that serves this purpose. The good thing is that there are only so many kung fu movies availableit takes a lifetime to watch.

Many are very cheap and the Internet, which is building a huge library of classic martial arts films, a very expensive hobby at all. There are literally thousands and thousands to choose from.

Join America's sweetheart, Lizzie McGuire, on the trip of a lifetime in the theatrical hit THE LIZZIE MCGUIRE MOVIE, starring teen sensation Hilary Duff (AGENT CODY BANKS). Goodbye, home! Hello, Rome! Lizzie, along with classmates Gordo, Kate, and Ethan, is celebrating with a graduation trip to Italy to experience la dolce vita -- and some awesome pizza! In a whirlwind of comic events, Lizzie is mistaken for Italy's biggest pop diva, Isabella, and falls for Paolo, Isabella's handsome singing partner. Transformed from awkward teen into international pop star, Lizzie now has the choice of a lifetime. Will becoming Italy's next singing sensation also mean leaving her family and close friends behind? It's up to Lizzie to embrace newfound courage and do things she never thought possible. Find out what dreams are made of in THE LIZZIE MCGUIRE MOVIE.

The Lizzie McGuire Movie Specifications

The Lizzie McGuire Movie spins around the axis of Disney Channel starlet Hilary Duff, whose glossy good looks and rather mature figure are balanced by a sweetly bashful persona and an endearing klutziness. On a school trip to Rome, Lizzie is discovered to be the virtual twin of an Italian pop star named Isabella--and her dreamy former partner wants Lizzie to take Isabella's place at an award show to avoid a lawsuit. Only Lizzie's loyal best friend Gordo (Adam Lamberg) suspects that Paolo may not be all that he seems. The Lizzie McGuire Movie is competent fluff, but the most fun to be had actually comes from Lizzie's pesky little brother (Jake Thomas) and his Machiavellian friend Melina (Carly Schroeder), who plot to humiliate Lizzie for fun and personal gain. Also featuring Alex Borstein (Mad TV) as Lizzie's tyrannical principal and chaperone. --Bret Fetzer

Starring John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Amanda Peet, Woody Harrelson and Danny Glover.

2012 Specifications

Now this is how you destroy the world. Roland Emmerich's 2012 pounces on a Nostradamus-style loophole in the Mayan calendar and rams the apocalypse through it, gleefully conjuring up an enormous amount of Saturday-matinee fun in the process. A scientist (Chiwetel Ejiofor) detects shifting continental plates and sun flares and realizes that this foretells the imminent destruction of the planet. Just as the molten lava is about to hit the fan, a novelist (John Cusack) takes his kids on a trip to Yellowstone; later he'll hook up with his ex (Amanda Peet) and her new boyfriend (Tom McCarthy) in a global journey toward safety. If there is any safety. The suitably hair-raising plot lines are punctuated--frequently, people, frequently--by visions of mayhem around the globe: the Vatican falls over, the White House is clobbered (Emmerich's Independence Day was not enough on that score), and the California coastline dives into the Pacific Ocean. Unlike other action directors we could name, Emmerich actually understands how to let you see and drink in these vast special-effects vistas--and they are incredible. He also honors the old Irwin Allen disaster-movie tradition by actually shelling out for good actors. Cusack and Ejiofor are convincing even in the cheesiest material; toss in Danny Glover (the U.S. president), Woody Harrelson (a nut-bar conspiracy-theorizing radio host), Thandie Newton, and Oliver Platt, and you've got a very watchable batch of people. Emmerich hasn't developed an ear for dialogue, even at this stage in his career, and the final act goes on a bit too long. This is a very silly movie, but if you've got a weakness for B-movie energy and hairbreadth escapes, 2012 delivers quite a bit of both. --Robert Horton

Why Did I Get Married Too? (Full Screen Edition)

Why Did I Get Married Too? (Full Screen Edition) Review

Why Did I Get Married Too? (Full Screen Edition) Overview

Gathered together in the Bahamas for their annual one-week reunion, four close couples eagerly reconnect, sharing news about their lives and relationships. But their intimate week in paradise is disrupted by the unexpected arrival of Sheila’s ex-husband, Mike, who hopes to break up her new marriage with Troy and win her back. The others soon realize they too are not immune to the challenges of commitment and fidelity. Angela doesn’t believe her husband, Marcus, can be faithful now that he’s a celebrity television newscaster. Dianne and Terry’s relationship is feeling the strain of raising children. And Patricia, a successful self-help psychologist, must finally reveal the deep flaws in her seemingly perfect marriage to Gavin. With their relationships hanging in the balance when they return home, each couple must choose between blame and forgiveness, doubt and faith, with life-altering consequences.

Why Did I Get Married Too? (Full Screen Edition) Specifications

Part Couples Retreat and part Douglas Sirk on steroids, Tyler Perry's sequel to his 2007 ensemble drama from the play of the same name reunites the four dysfunctional couples from the original film and runs each relationship (and the audience) again through the wringer. If you missed the first trip, don't sweat it. Perry writes in broad strokes, rendering each character readily definable (prideful husband, harpy wife, etc). The Bahamas is an exotic upgrade from Colorado, but the couples arrive for their annual retreat with even more baggage. Relationship guru Patricia (Janet Jackson) is unable to save her own marriage to Gavin (Malik Yoba). Terry (Perry) suspects his attorney wife Diane (Sharon Leal) is cheating on him, while Angela (Tasha Smith) is convinced her husband Marcus (Michael Jai White), now a successful sports talk show host, is cheating on her. Sheila (Jill Scott) is now married to former sheriff Troy (Lamman Rucker), who cannot find a job. Further drama arrives in the form of Sheila's abusive ex-husband Mike (Richard T. Jones), who claims his time-share privileges. The film is graced by the all-too-brief appearances of Louis Gossett Jr. and Cicely Tyson as an elderly married pair who provide the couples with a reality check. Even by Perry standards, the film's last half hour is one jaw-dropping confrontation/revelation after another on its way to the requisite uplifting conclusion. Some may miss Madea, but Angela's Katrina-esque rants fill the void. Using Gavin's 80/20 theory of marriage introduced in the first film, Too gives his fans even more than 80 percent of what they want in a Tyler Perry film. --Donald Liebenson

The Wizard of Oz

The Wizard of Oz Review

The Wizard of Oz Overview

When it was released during Hollywood's golden year of 1939,The Wizard of Oz didn't start out as the perennial classic it has since become. The film did respectable business, but it wasn't until its debut on television that this family favorite saw its popularity soar. And while Oz's TV broadcasts are now controlled by media mogul Ted Turner (who owns the rights), the advent of home video has made this lively musical a mainstay in the staple diet of great American films. Young Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland), her dog, Toto, and her three companions on the Yellow Brick Road to Oz--the Tin Man (Jack Haley), the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), and the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger)--have become pop-culture icons and central figures in the legacy of fantasy for children. As the Wicked Witch who covets Dorothy's enchanted ruby slippers, Margaret Hamilton has had the singular honor of scaring the wits out of children for more than six decades. The film's still as fresh, frightening, and funny as it was when first released. It may take some liberal detours from the original story by L. Frank Baum, but it's loyal to the Baum legacy while charting its own course as a spectacular film. Shot in glorious Technicolor, befitting its dynamic production design (Munchkinland alone is a psychedelic explosion of color and décor), The Wizard of Oz may not appeal to every taste as the years go by, but it's required viewing for kids of all ages. --Jeff Shannon

The Crazies

The Crazies Review

The Crazies Overview

In this terrifying glimpse into the “American Dream” gone wrong, an unexplainable phenomenon has taken over the citizens of Ogden Marsh. One by one the townsfolk are falling victim to an unknown toxin and are turning sadistically violent.  People who days ago lived quiet, unremarkable lives are now depraved, blood-thirsty killers. While Sheriff Dutton (Timothy Olyphant) and his pregnant wife, Judy (Radha Mitchell), try to make sense of the escalating violence, the government uses deadly force to close off all access and won’t let anyone in or out – even those uninfected.  In this film that Pat Jankiewicz of Fangoria calls “disturbing,” an ordinary night becomes a horrifying struggle for the few remaining survivors as they do their best to get out of town alive.

The Crazies Specifications

This 2010 remake of a somewhat obscure 1973 George Romero picture injects a mysterious virus into the water supply of a small Iowa town, and the consequences are… well, you didn't expect the consequences to be positive, did you? The movie is called The Crazies, after all. So when local folk begin acting a mite peculiar, it just means they've gone to the well too often--literally. Borrowing the structure of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the remake gets off to a clumsy start, but as the noninfected rally around the sheriff (Timothy Olyphant) and his doctor wife (Radha Mitchell), the action becomes streamlined and reasonably inventive. Director Breck Eisner has a particular knack for finding ingenious ways of killing people (a knife through the hand becomes a useful tool for the sheriff in one turn-the-tables moment), and he's been wise enough to hire respectable actors for the top-lined duties; along with Olyphant and Mitchell, there's also Joe Anderson (Across the Universe) as a loyal, amped-up deputy. If the movie misses the tart social-context stuff that Romero does so well, it at least fills the bill when it comes to the chase-and-escape business of a contemporary horror picture. The spate of such 21st-century remakes of 1970s horror pictures misses the raw, raggedy unease of those low-budget projects, but if you're going to make a slick new update, The Crazies is the way to do it. --Robert Horton

The market share of video on-line rental increases

Because the market share of online video is growing and why the traditional Video Rental Store is not removed?

Have you ever wondered why companies such as Blockbuster have a difficult time? E 'due to movies from a rental agreement is not as easy as it once was. Today, many people find it much more convenient to rent a movie online, which means that the online movie rental take a bite of the market share for companiesthat really saved. Remember that you want to do? Come home from work, take care of children, cook dinner, clean, and then return to face the traffic to go rent a movie, or worse, just add a face of traffic to the movie, so you do not get penalized with fees delay.

The truth is that renting movies online has become much more comfortable. In this process, all you have to do is look through the titles from the comfort of your computer desk,Choose a few titles to rent, then get the film in about a day, or better yet, download to your computer in about an hour. You also have the advantage to find titles of movies you could ever in a video store. The shop is not big enough. On the other hand, an online store, hundreds of thousands of titles to choose from, and all of them were easily classified.

Whichever way you look - Rentals - online is much more usefulthan renting a shop. Vacation rentals online are also cheaper than the video store to hire about half, and usually not late on any type of tax. This means you can watch and re-video as you like, before returning.

The only online store to pick up is that you must be a member of usual, but membership fees are very small, and there are many services that came with your membership fee, as well as most online stores for a period of free trialwhere you can see if the service is what you want to keep.

Film Review: The Crazies (2010)

CONCLUSION: Although laudable for its subtlety and seriousness, "The Crazies" is an unhappy and lifeless take on the zombie film is forgettable vanish.

The Good: You know the drill with the zombie movie: infected humans, turning people into zombie virus that go on a killing spree. This version has also led the military in a good effect. Director Breck Eisner, the original George A. Romero film with a subtlety and RemakeSeriously is commendable and surprising. This film tries and sometimes fails to create suspense through performance rather than Gore and definitely bad make-up. The first scene, where Sherriff Dutton (Olyphant) in front of a local man with a gun to a baseball game quite compelling and lays the groundwork for what is inherent in the use of subtlety and power. The zombies have a more realistic look, infected by the virus, rather than blood and gutsdripping from every orifice. The scenes of killing, although brutal, are thinner than normal and very effective. These scenes are probably the ones that are most difficult to observe not the zombies, but by the military to shoot down one and all in their own way, even the innocent people who were not infected with the virus. Actor Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell to do what they can with the material and are very watchable. Joe Anderson is the best role in the film as the faithfulDeputy Sheriff, who slowly turns on his colleagues, but eventually made the sacrifice himself to save her if he had been infected and learn. "The Crazy" is the approach tries to take the usual comparison worthy zombie movie.

The bad: Zombie movies often vary their condition and "crazy" is no exception. In this regard, we have all seen here before. However, this is not an excuse for not having fun with the material, but unfortunatelyall that is devoid of life with this film, to pardon the pun. There is no spark or energy, except for a few exciting moments here and there to really pull you into action. As a result, this film feels very mechanical and decided to non-creepy. The ending leaves little room for improvement, it's inevitable that many of these films do these days, opening the possibility of a sequel. "The Crazy" is to forget, which is a shame, because here and momentswhere you can make a better film, what we have seen since.

Love & Other Drugs

Love & Other Drugs Review

Love & Other Drugs Overview

Academy Award® Nominees Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway co-star in “the smartest, sexiest and downright best screen-melting romance of the year” (Parade ). Hathaway delivers an unforgettable performance as the free-spirited Maggie, who meets her match in a charming Viagra salesman named Jamie (Gyllenhaal). Maggie and Jamie leap into a no-strings-attached affair, but no matter how hard they try to keep things “casual,” they can’t help falling under the influence of the ultimate drug...love!

Love & Other Drugs Specifications

Last paired up for Brokeback Mountain, Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal reunite for this romantic take on Jamie Reidy's Hard Sell. The story takes place in the 1990s when a certain blue pill made its debut. Gyllenhaal's Jamie, a smooth-talking pharmaceutical rep, meets Hathaway's Maggie, an aspiring artist, while trying to persuade her physician (Hank Azaria) to carry Pfizer products. The attraction is instant, but Jamie prefers the thrill of the chase to anything more meaningful. While he and his partner (Oliver Platt, Azaria's Huff costar) work on a transfer from Ohio to Illinois, Jake and Maggie's fling develops into a relationship. On the comic side, Jamie battles with a rival rep (Gabriel Macht), switches from Zoloft to Viagra, and gains a roommate in his socially inept brother (Josh Gad, good value). On the dramatic side, he gets a glimpse of Maggie's world, which involves trips to Canada for medication and the temporary loss of motor skills (the screenplay fails to explain how she can afford such a spacious loft). Not counting shows like Thirtysomething, Edward Zwick remains best known for docudramas like Defiance, and Love and Other Drugs marks a new direction. The dialogue is snappy and the actors are game--both show a fair amount of skin--but the two halves of the film make for an awkward fit. Still, it's nice to see Gyllenhaal cut loose for a change. If Hathaway gives a more self-conscious performance, she brings the requisite amount of spirit and dignity to her role. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Best Children's Films of 2009

DVD and Blu-ray on the children's best 2009

As the parents of a 6-year-old, I spent a good time in theaters this year and we have seen most if not all of the most important film for children published in 2009. Therefore, I thought it might be useful to give you my brief reviews and opinions about what are the best children's or family movies of 2009, will be the Christmas for purchase on DVD or Blu-ray. I would in my view to see the mother andthe prospect of my son as if he liked it or not, and if I think that will be available for demonstrations to repeat at home.

These are not in chronological order, I'm just using it as coming from me:

1. Marley and Me

Marley and Me is a strange movie. In fact, I would go as far as saying it was a parallel two films that were smart, they both worked. on the one hand, and I was Marley, a film for people of middle age or approaching the post mid-lifeCrisis. He has worked on issues such as men to lose their independence, if a new relationship, the difficulties of juggling work and personal life, as well as issues relating to children and families. I must say I have addressed these issues very well and when you become a movie, I thought it was good enough and Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston were both excellent. However, Marley was the movie, marketed as family goofball comedy of a big dumb dog. My son and I had seen theTrailer for the film, as well as other feature film (can not remember who, exactly, but probably the likes of Hotel for Dogs, and Monsters vs. Aliens - see below). The trailer focuses on the crazy antics of the dog and its owner. In reality, what you get is the question of adult education, as explained above, intertwined with Marley is the constant relationship of the couple and everything is going well until the last half hour when oh my God, it makes a ofthe most shocking and heartbreaking films ever, including Kes seem an episode of Dancing on Ice. Marley is old and sick. Finally, it must be put to sleep. This is bad enough, you think, unless it is not. It 'a lot worse. They are forced to every family member to give his heart breaking farewell to his old friend to see how he loses the fight for survival, which ends with Wilson, there is administered when the lethal injection to put Marley to sleep. And she did not evenStop there - you despair of all children read their eulogies to the dead in the hours Marley family burial for the poor dog. My son was in tears (like most of the audience) and was actually very angry at the fact that the movie was so sad. I never met him I could see it was really like and felt very guilty for having forced him to bear, together with difficult issues like death for children. Amateur psycho-analysisaside, I'd say that's definitely not a film for young children. I do not know if it's a film for older children, adolescents.

Therefore, the assessment (of ten):

Dads Score: 8 Assessment Children: an ability to look repetition: 2 average: 3.6 out of 10

Worth buying Marley and Me Children's Christmas present? Absolutely not. (But is it worth to buy for dad!).

Marley and Me is based on a book with the same name of the course (and there are other books in the series Marley) and the book is also basedworth it.

2. Hotel for Dogs.

Hotel Bau is a far better record. A pair of teenage orphans in foster families are forced to take extreme measures if your dog needs a place to stay. Hai (played excellently but) they are hiding from their parents in terrible promote and execute a grand old hotel into disuse (of course, wanted to see before you get the building boom of the 1990s, when every inch of free floor vacuum seemed to be transformed into 20 apartments ). I do not want to ruinStory for you, but it was the two children, their social worker, her adoptive parents, and a great selection of dogs and children from the shelter (and destruction) by means of other children in the workplace to save pet Local Store. It 's a really good movie and one of our favorites this year. We have actually seen the film twice and I had no problem with me!

Therefore, the assessment (of ten):

Dads Score: 9 rating children: 9 ability to look Repeat: 7 Average: 8.3 out10.

Worth hotel purchase for dogs of Christmas presents for children? Absolutely.

3. G-Force

G-Force recently came in two 3-D and 2-D versions. I'm sorry to see our local cinema does not support 3-D so we ended up looking normal. I must admit that I was on G-Force is a lot of good skeptical. We had the trailer, which seemed as much fun, but I felt it might be a bit 'as a one trick pony. Fortunately, I was wrong. G-Force traces the exploits of a group oftrained guinea pigs (hence the G), together with a mole techno-genius, which is covered by (of course), the government scientist, a bit 'eccentric but brilliant payrolled. When the government "FBI" to choose to end its financing, the coach is desperate to get his team to solve a serious crime in progress. Once again, I will not spoil the story, but it's very funny, with excellent characterization and good person as well. Very nice.

Thus, the rating for the movie G-Force (fromof ten):

Dads Score: 8 Assessment children: 9 ability to look Repeat: 7 Media: 8 out of 10

Worth buying G-Force as a Christmas gift for kids? YES. We also have the game for the PSP, which is very good. I can not comment on other formats, but the odds are equally valid. Po 'difficult for very young children, however.

4. Aliens in the attic.

They Came from Upstairs was another summer release. It has aliens landing on Earth in a "meteor showers" in a houseHolidays with two families with a mischievous friend in tow with a device used to humans as remote control devices. And that's, uh, really on it. It 'been a slow start and was in fact something of a one trick pony. It seemed strange Internet Back in September when it would try to cut hair, they say that a type of ET place in film history (children with Activision video game t-shirts, etc., and Retro), although obviously it was presented in a way not just beSet in the year 1970. Not really work for us. We both got bored very quickly. The story was poor, and the aliens were like Little Frog crazy annoying.

So, voting for the aliens in the attic (ten):

Dads score: 3 rating children: three ability Re-watch: 3 average: 3 out of 10

Buy as a Christmas gift for children worth? Absolutely not, in our opinion.

5. Monsters vs. Aliens

Monsters vs. Aliens was another film in 3-D and came back, we can not see itin 3-D. E 'characterized by large beautiful animated characters and basically three "monster" that had been parked in a government laboratory science (including one lady who was hit by a meteor impact on their marriage, which in "Ginormica" shot the suicide of a woman transformed into a massive high - all in proportion, was not an attack of cake). They were destroyed in a last ditch effort, a large foreign body that the military had sent to conquer with unconventional weapons. Re-plotSpoiler withheld. However, it was a good fun romp, well made and enjoyable enough. However, I did not think that would have lasted so well to repeated visions. E 'was definitely worth seeing once, but I do not think he would have gotten hammered in our home DVD player.

So, voting for Monsters vs. Aliens (ten):

Dads Score: 7 children score: 8 ability to look Repeat: 5 average: 6.6 out of 10.

E 'Monsters vs. Aliens penalty as a Christmas gift for children? Maybe(But it's definitely worth seeing again). More than one means that a no! There are also many Monsters vs. Aliens toys when your cuddling were particularly impressed by the previous film.

7. Up!

Up! is the last of the Disney Pixar stable, and we were lucky enough to preview a couple of tickets to see the whole movie in Leicester Square D 3 in a few months ago. E 'beautifully animated (computer graphics course) and 3-D was effective, but probably notessential in my opinion. It 's a beautiful story of a man who will put in institutions. After working as a balloon seller and his wife as a young man, decides to embark on a final voyage to find a place (Paradise Falls somewhere in South America), they had to visit both, as small children dream, but never turn up . It starts the morning of his departure for the nursing home with the introduction of thousands of helium filled balloons attached to his houseraises and in the direction of adventure. Once airborne, he discovers a young "Scout" refers to Kevin, who had been away on his porch, at the time of life, and the two of them, and bond with their adventures. It 's a beautiful film, but I could not shake the feeling that this is a little something missing history. A lot of times the story is not very successful, mostly, and I felt it would be a bit 'deeper, or have, although I can not put myFinger on why this is so.

So, voting for Up! (Ten):

Dads Score: 9 rating children: 9 ability to look Repeat: 8 Average: 8.6 out of 10

On a purchase value! Christmas as a child? Absolutely.

8. Ice Age 3 Dawn of the Dinosaurs.

The third part of the Ice Age series, and I must admit, I was not sure what to expect. I thought that part was good, the second part was OK, but not very exciting. As it turned out, I had to be careful. Ice Age 3 has a storyline quite boringThat a search for a lost friend (Sid), which slipped by all she had usurped in the affections of a mammoth from the great mammoth imminent birth of their first child. Sid takes three children after a dinosaur over their eggs, but then his mother, takes care of them is kidnapped. Sid is a prehistoric dinosaur jungle done, and others (of course) and then find it all again. I'm not sure why it did not work for us, but it did not. SoIt is aimed at children, but it was predictable and rather boring. There are some funny parts, but the fight between Sid and his new girl on an acorn was fun for 5 minutes, but seemed to pop up every 10 throughout the film.

Therefore, the assessment (of ten):

Dads Score: 5 children score: 6 repetition ability to look: 3 Average: 4.6 out of 10.

Buy as a Christmas gift for children worth? No, unless your children all in the film Ice Age. This is my round off the topChildren's Films of 2009.

Piranha [Blu-ray]

Piranha [Blu-ray] Review

Piranha [Blu-ray] Overview

Studio: Sony Pictures Home Ent Release Date: 01/11/2011 Run time: 89 minutes Rating: R

Piranha [Blu-ray] Specifications

Debating the merits of Piranha 3D, director Alexandre (Mirrors) Aja's testosterone-driven valentine to Joe Dante's 1978 original and the excesses of '80s genre films in general, is a fool's errand; it is, after all, a movie about prehistoric fish preying on hormonal partygoers in various states of undress--and in 3D, mind you--so any review must answer the question--does it deliver what its key audience (young men, ages 14 to 24) require? On that front, the answer is an unequivocal yes. Special effects creators Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger present a veritable buffet of gruesome ways for the thinly drawn characters to die, from a piranha burrowing through a swimmer's head to the horrible encounter between a boat propeller and a longhaired victim. The sheer amount of nudity on display rivals a week's worth of Cinemax late-night screenings, rendered all the more excessive in 3D; as for the gimmick itself, it lends some unsettling depth to the underwater attacks. In short, if one attends Piranha 3D for grindhouse-style yucks, it's bound to be a rollicking good time. All others may find its relentless, Red Bull drive wearying; the whole affair is clearly meant to be a goof, just as Dante's original (produced by Roger Corman and penned by John Sayles) was, but where Dante's target was monster movie camp of the '50s and '60s (as well as Jaws), Aja and writers Peter Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg take aim at either cynical zeitgeist elements like the Girls Gone Wild series (with Jerry O'Connell striking the right tone as its craven creator) or hapless partygoers, which leaves an unpleasant aftertaste of misanthropy. Where the film does succeed is in its supporting cast, which strikes the same winking tone as Dante's version; Richard Dreyfuss and Christopher Lloyd poke fun at their Jaws and Back to the Future roles, while Adam Scott, comic Paul Scheer, and Eli Roth give appropriately broad turns. Elizabeth Shue, of all people, is the sheriff hero and acquits herself well to the absurd story line, as do Steven R. McQueen (yes, Steve's grandson) and Gossip Girl's Jessica Szohr as the film's Young Lovers. Again, taking issue with Piranha 3D is like finding fault with a cheeseburger for being greasy, but for those expecting a full-course meal, the fish get all the big bites here. --Paul Gaita

Babies [Blu-ray]

Babies [Blu-ray] Review

Babies [Blu-ray] Overview

BABIES - Blu-Ray Movie

Babies [Blu-ray] Specifications

The babies in Babies are four newborns, photographed in their natural habitat in distinctly different parts of the world. Hattie is in San Francisco, Mari's in Tokyo, Baryarjargal lives out in the Mongolian steppes, and Ponijao is born amid the simple straw huts of Namibia. In the course of less than 80 minutes, we're going to follow this quartet through their first year of life, a chronicle that director Thomas Balmes and producer Alain Chabat have likened to a nature documentary that happens to focus on humans. We can cut to the chase here and say that above and beyond any sociological weight this project might possess, this film's main method can be summed up in the words of David Byrne and Talking Heads from the song "Stay Up Late": "See him drink / From a bottle / See him eat / From a plate / Cute cute / As a button /Don't you want to make him stay up late." In short, babies are cute, babies are funny, and a camera focused on a baby is going to catch the sudden mood shifts and clunky crawling and all the other ingredients of home movies. Along the way, we may pause to notice the cultural differences between the locales, as the American baby seems elaborately nurtured (maybe baby yoga classes could wait a year?) and the African baby views a world just as full of wonder and newness as anywhere else, despite the material poverty of the locale. The Namibia and Mongolia sequences are certainly more arresting than the two urban sections, because their backdrops are so dramatically unusual to most Western eyes. If those differences are colorful, the movie nevertheless suggests that babies are more alike in their development than they are different. Is this enough to qualify as a movie? Well, even if Babies really is little more than a collection of sure-fire infant cuteness, it'll probably be enough for its target audience. --Robert Horton
